I’m not implying it - I’m saying it explicitly - 100% downvotes are negative. They are a signal that the content is bad for lemmy. They have a real chilling effect on people participating in smaller communities.

Actually I welcome disagreement. I love a good debate. It’s good for the community to have threads with lots of comments, and that usually only happens when people disagree
I’m about building a community. Which means growing participation. If every post in the community gets dog piled immediately then it discourages other people from genuinely participating.
I see moderating as a form of gardening, you have to cultivate the garden you want, weed it, nurture it.
