It’s a Valentine’s day tragedy.
As an instance admin myself, I’m so confused… If you went through the effort of setting up an instance, the effort of transferring all the access and stuff to someone else would be nothing. Just seems super weird to disappear without a trace and without handing it over to someone else.
the lemmy nsfw admin had previously asked if anyone was willing to take ownership of the instance because it was too much mental overhead to moderate a space that could sometimes get dicey and be legally liable for what was hosted on the server. there were no takers. the fact that this admin has been silent leads me to believe that this was not an active choice and instead something away from the keyboard led to this, be that legal, personal, or mental concerns that took priority over something they already felt no one would take on based on previously asking

If they were actively losing a lot of money on it that could be a valid reason in itself, couldve added up as they scaled up storage

Well if that is true, then that’s completely fair. If they looked for someone to take it and nobody did, then there should be no surprise that it is gone now. You can be sad about it but not too sad, you should’ve just taken up the charge yourself then.

Fuck! My first account was on lemmy.ee which passed away a few months ago. My second account was on lemmynsfw thinking the presence of porn would be a guarantee of its sustainability. It’s like been banned twice from Reddit.

Real question - how does one host a Lemmy that accepts all sorts of content without having to keep constant tabs on it?
Like, if we did sprinkle nsfw content throughout dozens of Lemmy servers?
I’m asking this because I hosted a pixelfed server one time, allowed thousand users, and those abuse reports became hard on my soul. Some were pretty vanilla nsfw. But some required me to forward it to 3-letter agencies in the States. And while I’m not a fan of talking to the cops, I’m also not a fan of awful shit on my server.
It must be monitored. You need good mods and admins keeping things clean. There’s gonna be instances where someone will upload something fucked and that risk comes with hosting such a service.
I know Cloudflare has a built in CSAM scanning tool that requires registration to enable, but other than that, you’ll have to monitor your site.

That was my 1st account… Not signed for porn, but I switched to lemmy in the first big migratory wave, and no other instance replied to my registration request. I even donated. Since then I have registered to many lemmy, but only this (reddthat.com) survived 😭
