    Chromecast was the Miracast usurper.

    Long live miracast

Just read about it, so is it like an open standard Google Cast/Airplay type thing?

It was the open standard, then Google broke it and introduced Chromecast.

And they’ve polluted the wording so that Chromecast means both the device, and the protocol, etc etc

I look forward to seeing what they rename the streaming protocol to. Maybe it will still be called chromecast

It was called Google Cast for a long time, after other devices adopted the protocol.

Honestly I had problems with every Miracast device I ever used. Beamers and TVs always broke connections randomly. Most of the time pairing didn’t even work and failed without an error.

So I have two Chromecasts, and this sucks, didn’t really want to replace them eith boxes (once they die). What viable replacements are there?

Buy a small PC, get one of those keyboard and trackpad things that is the form factor of a TV remote. It’s more expensive but nobody can deprecate it from you and you can stream anything you could stream to a web browser or torrent onto a hard drive. I did it earlier this year and regret not doing it sooner.

That’s basically what the first Chromecast engineer saw his wife doing that inspired him to think up the Chromecast…

My understanding was that Chromecast was just Google running the Embrace Extend Extinguish playbook on Miracast

Aright, we’ve got to get miracast back now that Chromecast is dead.

This is only viable if you’re a savvy pirate. Streaming services are limiting you to 720p unless you’re on some smart TV platform now

I just use 50ft HDMI cables now. I use a VLC remote control with my phone to load videos and play them.

I’ve given up on most companies though, they are all failures in my eyes.

ebay a few now before the prices go up and put them in a closet.

I am actively using 11 Chromecast Audios (long since EOL) in my house to send music to multi channel amps feeding speakers in my house. I ordered 5 of them within the last 6mo from Japan (ebay) at an inflated cost, but they are still available.

I still have my Chromecast. I love it. It’s so easy to use and fast. I really only watch streaming and don’t want to spend a lot of money on a new smart TV when my old TV still works. I have a small fire TV and it sucks, Amazon makes them cheap and it often crashes trying to load streaming services, never had an issue with the $30 Chromecast.

I use Apple TV at home and had my Chromecast with me when travelling for a decade now. Brave little thing.

And yes, Fire TV sucks monkey balls. It either dies immediately or gets problems after a few weeks.

Did Google ever write that they are actually discontinuing the older Chromecasts? I only see that they released a new device that does not have the name Chromecast.
