I didn’t know this until recently, but there is a national do-not-call list you can register your canadian phone number to through the government of Canada:
Additionally, if you’re already a customer with the company calling or have been within a year, they are allowed to call you; HOWEVER,
Next time a company – like rogers for example – incessantly calls you, ask them to add you to their internal do-not-call list, and enjoy your peace knowing that if they call you again, you can report them to the government of Canada. They face possible financial repercussions if this happens.
That vast, vast majority of spam callers are operating out of illegal call centers in India, they’re spoofing phone numbers, and they could not care less that you’re on a do not call list.
Fair enough, but it does help for telephone companies in my experience
Registered with the do-not-call list? Expect more calls, says consumer watchdog
CBC article from 2009.
I wonder whether it has changed in the last 16 years
I’m not sure. I just remember that after it was announced, people signed up, and their spam calls increased. Then any discussion around it disappeared.
I’ll look into it, thanks!
I know this is a bit technical, but it’s worked perfectly for me
Get a phone number in a very rural area there where you know absolutely nobody. Like the middle of Montana. Block all phone calls from numbers from the same area code. This kills 99.9% of spam callers. It can be done with twilio cheaply
Scammers be spoofing random phone numbers every single day here in the USA, I assume they do so in Canada too…?
Yes but this works a non-zero part of the time
