I’m afraid as an American that voted for Kamala that eventually the government will block us from communicating with other countries.

Ive never lived outside of America but sometimes I feel my values more closely align with most countries except the USA. The biggest one is a strong united working class. Instead of the arrogant “get mine, fuck everyone else” attitude here.

It makes me so sad. The more I learn about my country the more I realize how evil we are and what we’ve done to this world. To their own citizens, depriving them of education, healthy food, good Healthcare, strong worker protections.

What a cesspool of greed we’ve grown up in.

I really appreciate the influx of new users. My feed has been way more lively lately and the amounts of upvotes some posts get is quite amazing.

Shutting down API set Reddit on an obvious path where next migration waves were inevitable. I’m not sure that all of the reasons people think Reddit is bad are valid since I agree with banning for upvotes granted there’s a documented pattern of misbehaviour for example. People started to use Luigi as a verb and behaved like children when called out on following platform policy as well as law in general. Which is weird because they tried to do it on a corporate owned app and expected to be allowed to continue.

I don’t think Lemmy needs to get big. There’s a value in recognising nicknames and knowing people. We need as many small/medium sized communities as possible so that people have real connections rather than doing performances for general public. As long as they’re on ActivityPub we’ll figure out the rest later.

I joined the fediverse during the reddit API disaster and so far I’ve been enjoying it more than most of Reddit

There’s no substitute for my local subreddit, or some of my hobby ones. But my favorite mod got usurped during the protest and it all went to shit after, so I miss it but I don’t feel the need to go back.

Making and sharing start trek memes here has gotten me through some shit.

Lemmy feels like old Reddit, with actual useful information and conversation. I’m definitely enjoying it more so far, but I do miss the sheer volume of Reddit, and also some of the silliness

        Welcome to lemmy!

I agree, I think because there are fewer people the community vibes are stronger.

There are plenty of silly communities if you can find them. I like tenforward and dullsters (formerly dull men’s club). The historic memes subs are surprisingly popular, programming humour gets a lot of engagement too. There are trek and LoTR memes, and a lot of webcomics get posted (but don’t have the creator community of reddit).

As long as the silliness is in good taste, I say be the change you want to see and people will follow.

Honestly I think the worst part about Lemmy right now is that it’s still wayy too loud about hating Reddit. It kinda feels like it exists just for the sake of not being Reddit instead of actually being its own platform

Boost “revanced” wtf? I thought boost stopped working entirely over two years ago. People had said something about changing an API key or something but others said that didn’t work soon thereafter.

Boost works great on Lemmy though

Boost did stop working initially when Reddit moved to kill 3rd party apps, but it started working again pretty quickly if you were a mod (of ANY subreddit, even random ones that were created and instantly privated with zero members or content). Same for other 3rd party tools/apps.

Reddit sucks so much dick that any mod worth their salt on any major subreddit used/uses 3rd party apps for modding (because official Reddit was/is inadequate).

The API pricing change would’ve killed 3rd party mod tools, so a bunch of mods threatened to quit - which would (in theory, but probably actually not) fuck over a bunch of major subreddits right before Reddit’s IPO. Reddit capitulated and allowed users (only if they were mods) to make API calls with 3rd party tools/apps. Presumably Reddit did this begrudgingly, as the best option to preserve value before their IPO.

Boost and other 3rd party tools were down for a relatively short amount of time (I think a few days, or maybe a week or two? I don’t remember, but it felt quick) before coming back online. I’ve been using regular unpatched Boost ever since then, but it stopped working about a week ago. I thought it was just me, but apparently it’s stopped working for everybody?

That said, I’m not convinced it’s Reddit that’s behind this, I think it may be Boost’s developer, Ruben Mayayo. I get a 403 error now on Boost for Reddit, and the app - for the first time ever - showed me an ad for Boost for Lemmy. This can’t be a coincidence, and Ruben must know that Boost for Reddit has stopped working. I’m curious if it’s Reddit taking further action against 3rd party clients or if it’s Boost’s developer finally and decisively killing Boost for Reddit and notifying users of Boost for Lemmy. Maybe Ruben just wanted to finalize his split from Reddit and so he officially killed his app’s access to Reddit’s API?

Also yes, you could change the universal Boost API key to your own personal API key, and that would allow you to keep using it (or other 3rd party tools/apps).

Boost, and Sync I know can be made to work still for reddit with revanced patches. There are other reddit apps as well but I forgot which other ones is revanced supported.

I appreciate the sentiment (and I’m here on Lemmy, so go me), but Boost for Reddit still works with Revanced. If yours has stopped working, you may just need to uninstall it and reinstall it again.

    Or don’t. Don’t works too.

Does it matter? Lemmy fills a niche that other places don’t. It can only go up from here.

Lemmy doesn’t have to be big, just big enough to feel cozy 🙂

Lemmy isn’t about making you personally cozy.

Lemmy and the Fediverse is only truly successful if it changes the internet completely, to no longer be a space where the majority socialize according to the terms of corporations.

Anything short of that, and we might as well go back to Reddit and just let the rich have the internet.

Lemmy is about starting your own small content aggregator website.

“Lemmy” is about however you choose to use it. And having everyone using the fediverse does not preclude having cozy communities.

Internet communities once thrived with a few hundred members. The fediverse lets you have that, while also looking over the fence, as it were.
