I snagged one of those at a gas station heading home from Tennessee and it was really good!

anon6789@lemmy.worldOPto Superbowl@lemmy.world•'Britain's oldest ever' barn owl found at farm3·17 hours agoThe first year is very tough on wild animals. And we don’t help much as a whole, removing leaves and dead trees and other things animals use for homes, chemicals and poisons, hazardous structures like netting and windows, and of course cars.
I’m hoping this wise owl passed along a lot of good instincts over the last 2 decades. It’s very impressive what she has accomplished.
I was going to tell you they didn’t say, but he added new photos to his feed, so now I have some context.
These are probably one or both of the morphing owl post from the other day.
So, I saw this picture is new today, and this is the same tree, so these are likely from the same shoot.
The vole pass, male flies in, passes the vole to female, then she feeds the chicks.
So it looks like this is Mr LEO dropping off dinner for Mom and the kids.
anon6789@lemmy.worldOPto Superbowl@lemmy.world•Barn owls have 'worst breeding season in decades'3·19 hours agoI went back and checked my old post about climate change affecting nest boxes, and the species they were talking about doing poorly in their nest boxes in British Columbia were Barn Owls also.
Perhaps either the owls, their food, their babies, or all the above are more sensitive to temperature change than other species.
anon6789@lemmy.worldOPto Superbowl@lemmy.world•Barn owls have 'worst breeding season in decades'3·21 hours agoI’m curious as to what the cause is. Are they not laying at all? Are they eating the eggs because they need more food? Is there some kind of new stressor? Is this a sudden drop in numbers or has it been gradual over the last few seasons?
We can still learn important data, even if it isn’t fun stuff. It may help other animals in the future if things can be addressed proactively, for example.
That sounds good!
We all get a little hangry now and again. Can’t be helped sometimes!
anon6789@lemmy.worldOPto Superbowl@lemmy.world•Barn owls have 'worst breeding season in decades'8·23 hours agoI hope they’re able to figure out what is going on!
Bird counting and banding yields so much information for the low cost of doing it. These are very important ways of gaining insight to the health of our environments.
anon6789@lemmy.worldOPto Superbowl@lemmy.world•'Britain's oldest ever' barn owl found at farm4·23 hours agoSome good and not so good Barny news coming out of England this week. I love that this one is showing that Granny’s still got it goin’ on! 😜
I would love to see the loveable jester wearing the crown!
I hope it’s got some nice plush leafy grassy stuff in there.
This page has the insides of 9 nest boxes. I don’t think I’ve come across any photos or videos of owls moving nesting materials, and if they did, I’d imagine they’d make their own nests while they were at it, so I don’t think these were “furnished” by the owls. They seem to like it though.
It’s those Burrowing Owls you need to watch out for. I hear they leave manure at the front door and entranceway to deter visitors. That’s definetly a “shoes off in the house” kind of place! 😄
I’m glad everyone is liking these guys. I really love the Long Ears.
I don’t know if a pair of owls could get as crazy as those 2 guys…
Ol’ white owl, she ain’t what she used to be,
ain’t what she used to be,
ain’t what she used to be!
After some more research, the Jaeger is no slouch. It leads the life of a sky pirate. It antagonizes, steals, and is big and sturdy enough to pull it off.
This bird feeds on fish, carrion, scraps, smaller birds up to the size of common gull and rodents, especially lemmings. It robs gulls, terns and even gannets of their catches. Like most other skua species, it continues this piratical behaviour throughout the year, showing great agility as it harasses its victims. Only the Great Black Backed Gull, White-Tailed Eagle and Golden Eagle are known to take adult, healthy pomarine jaeger.
“I will eat fish fingers. I will eat your fingers. One way or another…I am eating…”
anon6789@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Does the fediverse really have a civility problem and what can we do about it?English7·1 day agoMy biggest gripe with the rise in violent talk is that it comes off like those commenters trying to get other people riled up into do that violence for them.
If you feel the justice system has failed and there is no other recourse, than that is one thing. But I keep seeing all these comments saying “why aren’t you out there doing anything about it?” and my first thought is always “well I haven’t seen your face on the news…” As far as I’ve seen it’s still all right wing nutters doing all the violence. If you aren’t out there doing something dangerous, why are you here telling others to go do that thing while you sit at home?
You’d call someone a hypocrite if they were on here every day telling other commenters they should feed the homeless, but you found out they don’t volunteer or donate or whatever. But I got to scroll past a bunch of keyboard warriors on every political or news thread throwing tantrums about why “nobody is doing what must be done.” Justified or not, if people start going after others, it’s going to go badly for both sides. If you won’t put your money where your mouth is, why are we all forced to read it?
If you’re serious, spouting off about it on a public forum is pretty stupid. If you’re not serious, you’re making the rest of us look stupid to anyone checking out this platform. I feel that’s a pretty fair assessment without judging your opinions or anyone else’s. We’re all wrestling internally with where our limits of tolerance are these days, but we can talk with each other productively about it, or we can rant and rave like a bunch of violent cavemen, but I know which one of those environments I’d rather be in.
There’s always someone out there bigger than you, especially if you’re the size of a tomato paste can!
Poor little Saw Whet…
Nice photo! My Jay friends are so fun to watch. They recognize me and will call to me for snacks sometimes.
