Canada@lemmy.ca•The oil industry is making billions from the Iran war—it should be taxed | CCPA
2·7 hours agoYou know what else makes everything more expensive? Fucking flood insurance. We’ve had 2-3 “once in 100 year” floods in my area (not a flood plain) in the last 10 years. That’s climate change and it’s already causing increased premiums, decreased of maximums, and costs of renovations and flood proofing. Other areas have other problems, e.g., wildfires, heat domes, etc.
So we can either face the reality that climate change adaptation costs money and come up with a way to make the polluters pay for their externalities, or we can all sell our houses to Aquaman.

18·17 hours agoWestern governments must combat “antifa and far-left terrorism,” Ms. Jacobsen’s prepared remarks asserted, casting the effort as an evolution in counterterrorism following the “global war on terror.” Her prepared speech defined far-left terrorism to include threats from communists, Marxists, anarchists, anticapitalists and those with “eco-extremist” and “other self-identified antifascist ideologies.”
Lol, welcome to Lemmy.
Seriously though, they would totally come for Lemmy.
And so, to avoid this from happening again, next time the Democrats are going to propose a candidate that doesn’t have that weak spot, right? RIGHT?

8·2 days agoAt this point, frankly, they get to. That’s what happens when you put your opponent on death ground. Israel has been blowing up villages in southern Lebanon, and have made known their genocidal aspirations for it, which are to be treated as credible based on their actions in Gaza. They put the Lebanese Shias on death ground. Now they have to pay the price of that mistake.

If your objection is to non western rich fucks owning western media, my reaction is a shrug.
All rich fucks became rich fucks by having some kind of fucked up backstory. Non western rich fucks exist. They are in not inherently worse than western rich fucks. All rich fucks should have no editorial say in media. Boo to any rich fuck who does get an editorial say, from Musk and Bezos on downwards.

AI transcript:
Speaker 1 00:00 At least one prominent Jewish group and few others have accused you harboring anti-israel sentiments that this group and others believe are harmful to the Jewish Community. I know you yourself are Jewish, and you have, of course, supported Palestine over the last few weeks. The last few months, um, and during this campaign as well.
00:16 I wonder, what do you have to say about that, that these Jewish groups are calling you anti-israel at this point. Well, I come from a
Speaker 2 00:24 Long tradition, uh, a multi-generation tradition of Jewish, uh, anti-zionalism. My great-grandfather was a leader in the Jewish labor Bund, which was founded in 1897, five weeks after the first meeting of the world Zionist Congress. So, as long as there’s been formal pro-israel Zionist organizations, there’s been a tradition that has disagreed with that within the Jewish Community.
00:47 I believe there’s a significant number of Canadian Jews who feel the way I do, and it’s been very welcome. To feel so at home in the NDP, a party which has expressed moral Clarity over the genocide in Gaza consistently as we express our outrage over the illegal attack on Iran, which is destabilizing our daily lives and geopolitics and the world economy, all at the same time, and this is part and parcel of being anti-war, pro-international law, and fundamental human rights.
01:17 And that’s my legacy. As a Jewish person, it’s part of my. As part of my culture, and it’s part of my jewishness, and not all people in the Jewish community in Canada agree, and those are more hard conversations and more hard debates, which we have in our own families, which we have in our community.
01:35 And they’re not going anywhere, but I’ve been clear and consistent in my position, and my position is pro-human life.

It’s their friends the Phalangists!
