“Omega vs. Kazuchika Okada to merge the International and Continental titles. The winner will get a new belt called the Unified title, with the idea of it almost being like a second world title. They spent a lot of money on the new belt and it had side plates with both Okada doing the rainmaker and Omega doing the One Winged Angel. Right now the plan is for those to be permanent on the belt so [to] commemorate the two championships and their legacy that Omega and Okada brought into the unification match. Permanent is a funny word because Tony Khan does make new belts all the time and could then change the design, or maybe not, but for now that’s the idea.”

Has wrestling really devolved such that the story doesn’t matter unless a belt is involved? Seems that way.

Well, WWE has two of EVERYTHING, despite having a smaller women’s roster than the men’s. AEW has tag titles, triples titles, 4 men’s titles, 2 women’s title.

I’m sure the stories you are thinking of are well-told, but there are so many belts! Why does AEW need a second world title? It doesn’t work well in WWE. Why would it work in AEW?

I suppose my question is more about how the companies perceive the viewership/audience. Do we give them the impression that we need more belts to care more about their product?

I don’t disagree that AEW has too many belts, and apparently neither do they. That’s kind of the point here. They are reducing their belt count by unifying the Continental and International titles into one, which reduces their belt count by one.

Not a bad idea. Just keep it as a secondary title. I like one men’s world title on top.
