Personally I think it is all posturing. It’s Texas tough talk. While I think at some point it may be beneficial to leave the union, we are not there yet.

The benefits would be that they would not be tied to the federal government any longer. Texas is a large enough state to go on its own. It is larger than many European countries. As such they wouldn’t be burned with politics they don’t like.

The detriment would be they would no longer be Americans, many of the large companies may leave since America could put tariffs on their products. They could also have a brain drain since many people would want to stay American.

We have a large divide in this country but I don’t think it’s to the point of breaking up but that is just my opinion.

ETA: In my opinion, there are more cons than pros right now to leaving.

Does the UK’s experience with Brexit, where they were legally allowed to leave, give you pause for thought that you may have vastly underestimated the problems secession might cause?

Yes Texas has a large economy but a good chunk of that is Federal institutions Defence, NASA etc and the companies that support them. The rest is also US companies.

The Texas economy would take a catastrophic hit even if it was allowed to leave peacefully.

Defence, Texas would have none as the DOD would leave and take everything with them.

As I said I don’t support them leaving but I also don’t live in Texas. I think one of the rights of the people is to decide if they want to stay in a union. It is a check against a tyrannical government.

As I pointed out, that would be one of the concerns. American companies would have to decide if they want Texas or America.

DOD wouldn’t be able to take everything. Texas owns the National Guard.

This is something Texas has talked about for years. I think it is just talk.

*Ben Shapiro voice* - Lets say, hypothetically, Texas does manage to become an independent country. What is the over/under on number of days before mass humanitarian aid needs to be sent to rescue the people living there?

Zero. Texas is large enough to take care of themselves. Without all the taxes going to the federal government, they would easily handle their expenses and secure the border. I am not sure why people think a state like Texas would just fall apart without the federal government. Texas has 29 million people. Texas has more exports than California. Texas has the 2nd largest GDP of any state in the union.

Yes, when people that slow down progress, try to interrupt the wheels of democracy, and act like they can’t comprehend that this is not in the best interest of the nation, yeah I think that’s the proper word.

No, that is not the proper word.

Not only do you use the R-word, you don’t understand what a Democracy is. If the people are voting for it then it is a democratic process. You also incorrectly made so weird comment about states rights, ignoring that this is the 10th amendment and pillar of how our country is run.

So next time you want to use the R-word, instead of typing it, look in the mirror and learn a little about how the country operates. While I don’t agree they should leave, I do support the right for states to leave when the union loses it’s value.
