Kelvin McKenzie, what a despicable arsehole.
Things like this dont happen in a vacuum. The latest episode of News Agents has an interview with John Bercow who spent a good few minutes explaining his roots in the Monday Club, a white supremacist Tory lobbying group who supported Apartheid and was set up by Enoch Powell.
I dont think the Sun is quite the same organisation today, but it helps to see the journey. McKenzie was a regular political commentator until fairly recently and his legacy was in the news this week: Hillsborough.
They should paint it on his grave when he dies and rots in hell
Knowing nothing of him aside from the supposed quote I would merely question his merits. Honestly I’ve never heard of him. Could somebody give me a representative sample of his poetry?

Google is your friend. He’s one of the top 50 UK poets in the last century, he was honoured by the crown, he’s a very respected poet.
Having zero knowledge of him, I was asking for what people considered works that are representative. I did get one suggestion. Google can be rather hit or miss on lots of things these days. Most of my results were that he died yesterday.
I gave one here, which links to his website.
Talking turkeys is probably his most well known.
