  1. No bigotry or oppressive rhetoric.

1b. Side B folks are welcome, but follow Rule 1. If you are a Side B Christian, please respect Rule 1 above, but know that you belong here and we want you to participate.

  1. Do not promote oppressive/harmful ideology.

This includes all attempts to promote or normalise hate, shame, or fear within Christianity (e.g. purity culture, scaremongering against gender-transitioning, “complementarianism’”, or “demonic” attacks).

  1. No sectarianism.

Legitimate criticism of other Christians/ faiths is allowed but refrain from prejudice against entire denominations/groups, and against other religions (e.g. Islamophobia).

  1. No disparaging Christianity

This is primarily a supportive space for anyone who identifies as Christian. While everyone is welcome to participate we ask that no one disparages Christianity.

  1. Be respectful and polite.

No personal attacks or accusations, harassment, misrepresentation of others, or insults. This also includes forcing debate, gatekeeping, and denying the validity of another’s faith.

  1. Don’t be a troll or a jerk.

Don’t concern troll, play devil’s advocate, or pretend to be confused when you really just want to start a debate. This Rule will be interpreted at the moderators’ discretion.

  1. No spamming or proselytizing

Don’t post here if you’re mass posting to other Communities. Don’t post here for self-promotion unless it’s particularly relevant to this subreddit. This is not your soapbox, and we are not here for you to preach at us. If you want to promote your media please ask permission from the mods.

  1. Be sensitive about linking to triggering N~ content.

Because we want this space to be as safe as possible, we discourage posting images or links to oppressive rhetoric from others. However, we do understand that venting is important sometimes. If you must post something potentially triggering, mark it nsfw or use spoiler tags, and censor any identifying information.

  1. Discussion of the ongoing israeli-Palestinian conflict is temporarily prohibited.

This topic has proven to be too divisive to discuss without consistently violating this subreddit’s rules. In order to maintain peace and to continue supporting one another, content regarding the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict is not permitted at this time.

Notice:

OpenChristian is inclusive, open and welcoming of all. We are LGBTQ+ affirming, but we welcome any who have chosen celibacy, as long as you respect Rule 1.

Do not post or comment about how you believe homosexuality is a sin.

We have heard this a thousand times, and you have nothing new to contribute to the conversation.

If you do this, you will be banned.

Please note that as a progressive Christian community, we are explicitly followers of Christ, as well as LGBTQ+ affirming and egalitarian.

Friends are very welcome to participate, no matter what you believe.

But this is not the place for questioning or debating these positions.

    Do not promote oppressive/harmful ideology.

How about you start with Christianity? Though if slavery becomes a thing again, it might be very useful - you don’t want to go figuring out how many donkeys a slave is worth if God has already figured it out for you.

Their community it literally predicated on social progress and compassion. It being popular not to like their demographic doesn’t make you less of a shithead for going around and being antagonistic.

Religions mean all sorts of different things to different people. Your definition of their beliefs is not more accurate than their own; going around telling other people what they believe is a shitty way to act.

Sincerely, An atheist who is very tired of the meaningless, self righteous, antagonism towards anyone who identities with religion in any capacity on lemmy. Please stop giving yourself permission to be mean to people who are different from you, as long as you can contrive a strawman of who they are that justifies being a jerk.

Oh, I am and will continue to be very tolerant of everyone, except of people who make it possible for people to believe in various sky daddies. That wouldn’t be as bad if people also didn’t murder in the name of said sky daddies.

To paraphrase the ridiculous statement of the community, would it be okay if someone told you they were a Nazi, but don’t worry, only the good parts, not the bad ones like murdering lesser people?

Nazism is an ideology definied by violence and the rejection of the humanity of minority populations.

Christianity is defined as a belief in a christian god, and if frequently practised in a way that is cruel to those in an outgroup, but it is not an intrinsic, definitional feature, as evidenced by the ones ability to readily find Christians who are progressive, welcoming of out-groups, etc.

Condemn people for their actions and the impact they have on the world, not the actions you see as common within a demographic. Thats the same argumentative cloth that racism and bigotry is cut from.

Just look at the wildly unpleasant welcome Zohran Mamdani has recieved for being Muslim. Islam is a faith that is frequently practiced in a way that is cruel and regressive, spreads the violent persecution and sometimes execution of the out-group, and yet here is a wildly progressive socialist Muslim running a campaign built on an inclusive social movement.

Martin Luther King Jr was a Christian, and Malcom X was a Muslim. Religious ideologies vary wildly from one practice to another, and one individual to another, and are very explicitly defined by an idea unrelated to cruelty towards an outgroup. Nazism is a completely fallacious comparison.

Have you ever read Bible? It’s, not unlike Nazism, an ideology defined by violence and the rejection of the humanity of minority populations.

I do condemn people for their actions and the impact they have on the world. If some Nazi doesn’t do anything personally, is it fine that they’re a Nazi? Simply being part of the group that does horrible things is supporting them.

And I’m not talking about dictatorships like in the middle east where you can choose between being a muslim and death. I’m talking about full-on western freedom enjoying people who by choice are spreading religions of hate, be it christianity, islam or hinduism.

As another example, one good thing of Nazis is supporting local economy. Hopefully we both agree that doesn’t really offset the rest of Nazism and make it any better.

So imagine someone told you “yeah, they’re a Nazi, but they only support the good parts, like local economy growth, not the murdering of black people and gays.”

If the above sounds ridiculous to you, congrats, you finally see how ridiculous it sounds to me when you say “they’re Christians, but they don’t support murdering of gays and black people, they just believe in God.”

No idea who Zohran Mamdani is, but their faith in whatever sky daddy should be ridiculed. There’s no place for religion in the modern world and 500 years from now people will think how weird it is that we had access to all those information on the internet but still believed in magical beings who are contradicted like 5 times every 2 pages of their respective holy books.

TL;DR islam and christianity are extremely hateful religions and should not be tolerated, no matter whether you claim to just pick the “good parts” of the religion.
