Was “Dr Ian Cutress’s take on the current situation” but the community decided it was worth turning the discussion to the current topic, so since all comments were off topic, I moved the video to a new post.
Changing the post subject and body because you don’t like the discussion to give you another bite at the apple to post it again fresh, demonstrates a vulnerability in Lemmy.

A normal link for people to use :)

The youtube link gets intercepted by the piped bot, NewPipe clients, the Libretube app, and various privacy-friendly browser extensions 🤷♂️ instead of linking to a single invidious instance. Normal people on Lemmy may also want to just use… the YouTube app they’ve already got on their device, or the site itself, their choice.
With a YT link, lemmy can also correctly identify duplicate/cross posts that way, so people aren’t scrolling past the same thing twice (if their lemmy client supports that feature).
If this was a privacy community I can understand linking straight to a random proxy/alt Tube instance… but on a community as mainstream as Linus Tech Tips I struggle to see how that’s appropriate here.
To be honest, most people here, including myself, don’t care what people link to. It just seems extremely short sighted IMO to assume that other people are on Lemmy for the same reasons as you, and drop a sarcastic jab at another user because they offered an alternative for the wider userbase

Yeah I agree that it would be nicer to have https://decentralizedvideo.link/ that 302 to random invidious instances. But out of respect for people who use an actual computer, and don’t want to edit the URL by hand (you know, the rationale for posting the actual youtube link), I think it’s important to provide both. Whether I push it as a centralized corporate service or as a decentralized community-powered service is my personal choice; and if you’re on Lemmy, it’s kinda hypocritical to push the centralized, corporate logic.

That sounds like a specific client problem. Let them implement parsing invidious links too.

Oh, I don’t assume. I actually know most people are drones that will not spend a single second thinking about how they are played by megacorporations. I chose to do it this way, regardless. I know, to a lot of people here, this arguably makes it worse. So, eeeh? (downvotes welcome).
Nothing screems federation like calling anything yewtube
Bruh, it’s federated. Go take that issue with the owner of that server. I don’t care, I only use that name because the only other instances I could remember the name of, were offline within a week, or are constantly flaky…
You replied to someone taking issue in that and providing the platforms correct link, where the video was posted. The user is able to use the native app. If you want to pipe a video, then ignore yewtube instead of deflecting.
For what’s it’s worth i use new pipe and it doesn’t understand the alternative link, I had to parse the url by hand. By offering the canonical link I intended for people to be able to use whatever workflow they are comfortable with without manual intervention.
Be that newpipe, browser JavaScript url rewriters, etc
