Most of the time, people with anxiety don’t realize what it is, because it just seems normal. Not that you necessarily have an anxiety issue, but that’s a common enough manifestation.

Can you figure out any particular reason you feel anxious about reading emails?

It’s because I haven’t checked them in a while and I’m worried about the future which they remind me of.

          Right now that’s:

What will I write about for my thesis?

But they also make me think of bigger questions like:

Would I be able to find a job in this bad market after I graduate? Would I be able to fulfill all the immigration requirements and keep my permit? How can I even do that when I’m running out of savings and it looks really hard to find a job without months of searching? How would I be able to find an affordable apartment near wherever I can even find a job?

Idk. I guess I’m just at a moment in life where I’m stressed in general because many things are coming to a head. Career, immigration, parents retiring, the end of grad school, low savings and loans from family, and so much more. Just ughh. If I could skip 5 years right now I would.

Yeah, that’s enough to make anyone feel stressed. But in case you haven’t dealt with that kind of anxiety before, some pointers:

            • Take care of yourself, as much as possible - self care can pay dividends when you have to tackle big things
            • If you find the anxiety comes and goes in waves, take advantage of the “low points” and give yourself some breathing room in the “high points”
            • If it helps, do some of those tougher things with loved ones around. My wife often asks me to be with her when she has to respond to emails or things that stress her out.

            Hope that helps!

No, because 90% is the helldesk emailing me about stuff I already know or I have already actioned.

The rest is useless internal spam or external marketing spam.

I did, but I forced myself to do it yesterday… Zero emails directed at me!

Time to celebrate by basking in my self-satisfaction and not checking it the rest of the week.
