Some of the comments in this thread really show how quickly both sides are to dehumanize one another.

Tolerance is a peace treaty, them wishing for and enacting policies that would lead to the deaths of people like me and the people I love means that my ability to tolerate them is gone.

I will happily read this guy’s obituary and the obituaries of his cohorts.

Mitch dehumanized himself through a lifetimes work stifling progress and assisting in the deaths of thousands.

Take your “both sides” bullshit and gtfo

“both sides” is the fastest giveaway of a bad faith troll lately. At least the unapologetic conservatives don’t pretend to take the moral high ground

it seems pointing out destructive discourse is considered “troll” behavior now. i have learned another thing today, thank you.

Not explicitly, no. It’s just a red flag that if you engage with this person it will be unproductive and frustrating.

Conservatives wish death on pretty much all liberal politicians every now and then, sometimes on live television, and no one even bats an eye. A handful of leftist internet comments have “ding dong the witch is dead” vibes and you start clutching your pearls.

i believe the cause for the rift in american politics is that both sides (i mean both) consistently forget that we are all people that generally want to do the right thing. the source of discourse is differing ideas on the best way to achieve that right thing.

when those differing ideas are misconstrued as due to people being ‘evil’ is both incorrect and in bad faith.

it’s disheartening to watch people wish misfortune and misery on those that think differently than themselves, that’s what i’m trying to express.

I don’t intend to have a back and forth with you, I have reason to believe it would be unproductive and frustrating.

Maybe just consider that people have no better recourse to judge a person than their actions, and mitch has done terrible things. His motivations, and whether or not he is “evil” or just generally trying to do the right thing, are irrelevant in the face of his destructive political actions. People aren’t happy that an old man had a seizure, they are happy the old man might not be causing harm much longer.

Oh I’m willing to have a few comments, I should have been more clear. I was just saying I didn’t want this to just keep going indefinitely. Bye!

What’s disheartening is that you want to handwave away the damage this man has caused as “thinking differently.” This is the sort of false equivalence that nets you the other comment you received, which you bemoaned as some sort of “learning experience”. Wringing your hands about “both sides” is worse than an empty platitude when one side is actively trying to dismantle civil rights, among other things.

Something I’ve noticed - folks who do this only do it in threads where left-leaning people or US democrats are angry. Will you be the first person to prove me wrong on that? Are you in some maga thread somewhere telling them to be a little nicer, too?

I’ve never thought about it like that. Internet comments expressing a bit of schadenfreude really are morally equivalent to ripping civil liberties away from millions of people! Thanks internet commenter!

I said something along the same line on Mastodon and got eaten alive all because I refuse to celebrate a moment like this. I despise the guy, but I won’t lower myself to celebrating a possible stroke.

Really bugs me too. It’s vulgar and mean-spirited. I say this as a transfem who is an explicit target of discriminatory republican policies.

Making fun of someone because they’re old is unacceptable. That’s civility 101, if you claim to be a democrat and do this kind of thing you’re a fraud imho
