Feels like any one who studies science and engineering is being funneled into the data and computer sciences and it’s causing alienation with their work and artificially creating a low-wage workforce. If you studied Biology, you’re forced to do data shit, if you studied Civil Engineering you might not be able to get a job in the field so you end up working in IT for half the money they would pay someone WHO ACTUALLY STUDIED THAT SHIT.

It’s like asking every football player to play basketball. You play with basketball players and you end up riding the pine because, well, you suck ass and YOU NEVER LEARNED HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL.

Completely alienating to be forced to work with people who are experts in the field, doing shit you never learned how to do and aren’t good at and then corporate gets the excuse to pay you much less than some computer nerd.

It’s like the jail skit.

You studied Art? Jail Computers.

You studied Robotics? Jail Computer.

You studied Botany? Jail Data shit.

Imagine if you played the drums your entire life and the only job you could get had you playing the fucking violin, you know, cause you can read music. What the fuck man.

It’s not just that I would make less money being a biologist than being a fucking programmer. I’d be completely fine with that. No, you have to be a shitty programmer, make half as much money, and eat shit because you suck at it unlike Dave the CS douche.

Like, I’ve worked as a manual laborer on construction sites and in restaurants and I found that pretty alienating because I wasn’t as skilled as other people but shit, at least I didn’t pay college tuition to work and at least felt way more satisfied with my job.

the point is to depress wages. IT salaries were too high and the capitalists figured out “learn to code” would create a glut of available labor and bring wages back down to more tolerable levels. the industry people went into even 6 years ago isn’t the one zoomers are now entering and they’re going to find shit working conditions, bootlicking older coworkers, all for shit pay. it’s a good time to start organizing.
