Note for mods: This is hosted from my instance’s sister PeerTube instance. I’ve reached my breaking point with YouTube’s enshittification so I’m linking to alternatives when and where possible. If there’s any issue with this, just let me know and I’ll edit the post to a song.link URL instead.

Not a problem. I’ve considered posting things from my Navidrome server (where I’m actually listening when I post here) but I don’t love the idea of the links getting hit by bots and whatnot. Using song.link serves as a dual purpose multiplatform link and a middleman for the traffic, good enough for me ATM.

This community is meant to be easy to engage with so I try to encourage people to post rather than getting hung up on what music services people use, etc. I appreciate that others are taking the time to share something here at all, and people who have a problem with a particular service are perfectly capable of looking up music on whatever their preferred alternative is IMO.

Heh, I’ve got bot detection on my web services and they’re all redirected to a Nepenthes tarpit where they just get fed an endless stream of slop. Just doing my part to make the world better lol.

There are certainly things in place to keep the bots at bay but I also don’t want more headache than absolutely necessary for a service I use to relax lol.

I don’t mind sharing direct and downloadable links with friends on xmpp and stuff. Lemmy is a little bit different though just because the audience is more of an unknown and can vary quite a bit. For the sake of community engagement I think it’s probably better to share from a more generalized service made for the masses because a lot of people don’t feel comfortable clicking links from weird domains. It also lets them listen on whatever they’re familiar with so they can easily favorite the song or share something from their own library. At least that’s my hope.

That said, people are free to share from whatever service they are using. If others feel comfortable sharing from their personal library (even with downloads enabled), why not? As long as the data isn’t on our servers, send it IMO. 💚

          Fair enough!

I’m a huge fan of people embracing the internet as it was originally intended rather than the corporate machine it turned into. As long as it’s not some shady-looking site posted by an hour-old account, I’m perfectly content to stream some tunes from someone’s basement homelab haha.

I’ve got gigabit fiber so might as well spread the love. This instance is almost 3 years old, and the PeerTube instance runs under a subdomain of it, so hopefully I’ve established a good enough reputation that people aren’t turned off by it.

Same, but I’ve also come to the realization that promoting alternatives too fiercely can scare away the people who happen to love YouTube/Spotify/etc and aren’t ready or willing to try them out yet. We want them to come here and share music, then figure out they could have a better experience with other solutions hahaha.

Edit: I realized after posting this could be seen as passive aggressive commentary against FOSS links when I didn’t mean it that way. 🫠
            Carry on.

Nah, I get it. I get annoyed when people post Invidious links. Not because I’m against them, but because I run an Invidious instance myself and have a browser plugin to re-write YT links to use that one that’s 15 feet away from me. But the plugin only works if the link is to YouTube. When it’s some random Invidious instance on the other side of the planet, it takes forever to load because of the multiple levels of redirection and is just frustrating since my browser plugin would have redirected a YT link to my local server.

I just figure with my ample bandwidth, PeerTube’s P2P load balancing, Lemmy’s small-ish userbase not sending a million simultaneous requests to it, and not having to proxy to another source (e.g. YT) it would balance out in my favor.

Will def continue to provide “corpo” links or maybe switch back to those for the “main” link and provide FOSS ones as alternates. If you’ve got a preference here, just let me know.

Whatever works for you mate. I’ve shared links from just about every corpo service out there simply because trying them out exposes me to new music and I always leave with new favorites. (And I don’t feel right hating on them without suffering through them now and then lol.)

Having a low barrier for entry is also intentionally part of the culture here because I want people to feel comfortable sharing their music. It’s something easy for most people to relate to in positive ways, which is something I think the fediverse could use more of.
