These first two episodes are proving a really hard watch for me. I’m not a Trekkie in the least bit, so I’m not sure if that’s the shortcoming, or if the series really does have a rocky start.

I guess I just remember it a little more interesting than this. However, it’s likely I didn’t start watching it as a kid until S02 or S03.

S01 is kind of a rocky start, they are all so uncomfortable (in their character and their uniforms) and the near shot-for-shot episode remakes from ToS don’t help (Naked Time/Now I forget the other one). I remember my dad and I almost not continuing watching as it seemed they were just gonna rehash ToS, it does get better and easier to watch near the end of S01.

If you are not a fan, why watch ST:TNG? Are you a fan of other ST media? I go back and watch the series from start to finish every few years, along with Tos, Voyager, and DS9, never got into the Kelvin timeline, nor Enterprise they just didn’t vibe with me.

Well, I watch a lot of things I’m not necessarily a “fan” of but can appreciate the pop cultural and historical significance of, or have nostalgia for. Or simply want to watch once through to be able to add it to my mind vault.

That being said, I skipped forward to S02, made it a few episodes in, and still am not feeling it. This might just end up being a very rare “I don’t get it and can’t get through it” pass for me.

Oh yeah, it was a fun one. What do you think of Dr. Polaski? I both loved and hated her character, but loved the character she played in ToS

She’s on the brash side, but I think her abrasiveness also offers occasional antagonism needed to push episode plots forward.

TNG is fantastic once it gets going, but yeah, the first season is definitely rough. Any time I tune in to TNG and see the colored seams on the shoulders, I know it’s time to find something different to watch.

The Next Generation is where the phrase “grows a beard” comes from. The phrase means the series starts rough and then gets better after a few season. For TNG that moment is when Riker grows a beard in season 2. From then on the series gets way better.

Season 1 is rough for sure. There are some solid episodes (Lore’s introduction etc) but yeah, it’s unpolished to start with. Im watching it through rn as well so I feel your pain.

    It gets much better.

It’s very episodic and different from the tv we’ve had for 15 years. The actors also were feeling out the roles. As I recall s01 was rough.
