I loved the cars. I had a college classmate had an old school VW bus. Such fond memories. I didn’t mean to disparage the bug. More like I think about old cars vs how new cars are built vis a vis safety.
Yeah, I imagine the bus, without anything in front of the driver to absorb any impact energy, is probably less safe than the average old car.
The bug on the other hand, with its engine at the rear and light build, has quite a good crumple zone to protect the passengers, probably better than average at the time, even if the front wasn’t specifically designed for that purpose.
I used it mostly in city traffic, I doubt I or my family were in any danger.
