The satellites have laser links so they don’t have to be in direct view of a ground station. Starlink works fine in the middle of the ocean as long as you have a plan that allows that. The latency will be higher off shore though.
Does Starlink not need ground stations? This is from 2 months ago and they are indeed still needed.
So it is really not viable on the ocean etc. etc. and pretty much a better cellular network in terms of coverage.
I’m pretty sure they offer a more expensive option for offshore use. Maybe that one doesn’t need ground stations?
