“Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover and enjoy.”
Yeah, because that’s what I think when I go into a Best Buy: “they could really use more space.”
more tech for them to explore, discover, and enjoy
Like what? Unless they’re going to become a free Lan center with a bunch of rigs and vr headsets set up on one side with couch console gaming setups on the other to “drive hardware sales” what big innovative tech is going to make sense in that old retail consumer space?
We do this where I work, we call it the teen space. The only difference is we don’t want to sell you anything, but ask you to signup for a library card.
ask you to signup for a library card.
Diabolical…
The first hit is free but after that the cost is…also free. These kids don’t stand a chance!
I’m jealous. I’m reading a library book right now lol.
Last one I went to was trashed and most of the shelves were empty. I keep thinking they could make more cash sub-letting kiosk spaces to smaller tech brands. If there’s funds rock the flea market look, they might as well go all the way.
I’m surprised BestBuy is still around. I can’t think of a time in like 20 years that they actually had the thing that I went there to buy. It’s not like I bought some alternative while I was there out of frustration. No I just went home and ordered it from the internet like I should have in the first place, vowing once again to never bother going to shitty Best Buy. This cycle has repeated every 5 years or so. I think the last thing I actually purchased there was a Voodoo 2 video card.
I bought a TV from them once cause Amazon kept fucking up my order (got “lost in transit” twice). They’re good for buying TVs, phones, and smartwatches when you don’t want to deal with shipping. Don’t bother if you’re looking for anything else, though. Especially car audio and computer components.
You are absolutely correct. My partner and I got Pixel 6s on a huge discount from Best Buy when it was time to upgrade.
I understand completely. The last time I went to a Best Buy was about 5 years ago for a game that was on sale because it had sold out already on Amazon. Annndd they didn’t have it either despite it being listed as in stock. Best Buy is useless.

They might be past their best by date…
Like most business, Best Buy has a website. You can check if they have something, before you show up at the store.
I can’t think of a time in like 20 years that they actually had the thing that I went there to buy.
Like a few folks have mentioned, I bought my last two TVs there. If it sucks or it’s a bad panel or I just don’t like it, I just box it up and take it back to the store. No wondering if it’ll get damaged in shipment or ganked off the porch (or take a day off and hope it’s delivered when it’s supposed to be).
They’re also really good with getting in amiibo, but that’s a super niche thing.
I go there quite a bit for tech stuff. Here in Canada (I’ll assume it’s the same for the states) they’ll prices match any retailer online or off and you can walk out with your thing that day. They have a 12 month payment plan so big purchases are a lot more manageable.
I wonder how much of their sales are from physical media.
Please don’t make me research for myself. I’m too lazy.
I buy blurays from bestbuy every other month. BB and eBay are my main sources.
I suspect pretty low given how they aren’t going to carry it anymore.
My question is how many tv’s do they sell vs amazon.
That’s the only thing I bought from there in the last several years. A huge TV because I did not trust Amazon to ship it and didn’t want to figure out how to send it back via UPS pop-up shop.
That’s the only reason I go in there though
DVD extras were some of the greatest things ever.
Robert Downey Jr. doing the ‘Tropic Thunder’ commentary in character because that’s what the character was committed to.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The consumer electronics retailer plans to phase out its DVD and Blu-ray sales by early 2024 — with physical movies set to be sold in-stores and online as they are today through the holidays, Best Buy confirmed to The Associated Press Friday.
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago,” the company said in an emailed statement.
“Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover and enjoy.”
Last month, Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service, for example, officially came to a close as the company’s iconic red-and-white envelopes made their final trip.
Speculation about the fate of Best Buy’s physical movies began swirling around this week after several media outlets reported on the company’s plans.
And according to Variety, which also cited industry sources, Best Buy made the initial decision to end DVD sales nine months ago.
