Regarding lasers: they’re not as affected by smoke, clouds, and rain as laypeople assume. The two wavelengths that would be used are in either green or IR, which have the lowest atmospheric attenuation, aren’t really effected until you get into conditions that would prevent aircraft (missiles and UAV included) from flying.

Also, it doesn’t make as much sense to put on your capital ship because they’re much better at defending others (more time on target for crossing missiles than incoming, as well as warheads being the most armored part of a missile and the air passing by the tip cooling the spot you’re trying to heat).

Regarding the Osprey: I was told that the down pressure from the propellers in VTOL mode is too great for SAR missions, as it would either drown swimmers or be too difficult to bring them onboard. Best you would be able to do would be to drop rescue swimmers nearby and then send a boat to pick them up. Now, I don’t have a source and this could very well be a “trust me bro” kind of thing

My biggest counterpoints to using the San Antonio class hull are that they’re flat bottomed (so, unstable) and the amphibious-associated ballast tanks are superfluous for a surface combatant. Designing a purpose-built hull from the keel up would be better in just about every way, but I don’t see anything smart happening from US shipyards.
