Linux@programming.dev•Alternative to Spotify - Linux client?English
11·2 hours agoUh… yes?
Spotify memory usage: 450MB
Rhythmbox memory usage: 95MB
A browser is one of the most complicated applications commonly running on a computer; its code is massive before you load in the mountains of javascript. Also that is measured by RSS - the difference is even starker when you bear in mind that of the 50MB that rhythmbox might be sharing with other processes, most of it probably is being, because a lot will be graphical toolkits used by other programs. Spotify has a smaller fraction, at about 130MB, and god knows what it’s pulling in and is able to share with e.g. the main browser process.
RAM is only not expensive in desktops. In laptops, getting more RAM almost always means getting a higher-tier laptop in other ways which adds a lot to the price.

What’s it like having parents who are proud of you?
Maybe she had secret sympathies…
I think the only way to display something like that is alongside allied propaganda from the era. It does all have a very striking aesthetic, so I can understand wanting to display it, but there are limits
I don’t get it.
Is the point that the lines are diagonal, rather than vertical or horizontal?
Is it that a proper tool would have anti-aliased them?
Is it that the rightmost lines have been scaled up so have fatter pixels than the others (anisotropically in one case I think)?

29·12 hours agoIt’s a shame people downvote this instead of replying.
The guy’s in favour of rent freezes, so there’s one policy that ain’t gonna work long term. Free buses OTOH, sounds great.

Steam@lemmy.ml•72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to studyEnglish
4·1 day agoThey have the largest share and can direct the market/development
That means they’re a monopoly. Having some small fry competitors doesn’t make you not a monopoly.

3·1 day ago“Lock-in” doesn’t make it a monopoly; market share does, and Steam dominates there. So much so that EA gave up on offering things exclusively on Origin.

News@lemmy.world•U.S. citizen shot from behind as he warned ICE agents about children gathering at bus stop, lawyers sayEnglish
12·1 day agoYou haven’t explained at all - and still haven’t - why you felt the need to accuse people of thinking it’s OK. Remember you started with “well that’s OK then” - implying the parent comment thought ICE was fine to shoot people - and then said “Do you think it’s ok he got shot?”
You have only explained that you think what ICE did was wrong. You haven’t explained why you felt the need to imply that other people thought what ICE did was right. I guess you aren’t going to.
Imagine if I replied to your comment with, “do you think it’s OK that JFK got shot?” You’d be pretty confused, right, because you haven’t said anything to suggest you thought it was. That’s exactly what you did, just with someone else, not JFK. There was exactly the same amount of hint that the person above that it was OK.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•UK: China academic intimidation claim referred to counter-terrorism policeEnglish
3·1 day agoSure. But it’s not actually terrorism, is it? In fact, as worded, completely inoccuous activity seems to fall under the act - the definition of “UK-related activities” in the section includes literally any activity taking place in the UK. So intentionally helping set up a foreign embassy seems like it falls under the act.
Regardless, national security it may be, but terrorism it ain’t.
FishFace@piefed.socialtoData is Beautiful@lemmy.world•The most male and female reasons to be admitted to the hospitalEnglish
3·1 day agoPeople don’t cycle that much overall, due to perception and poor infrastructure, but yeah it’s also skewed by gender. My impression is that the public perception of poor safety is something that most people are exposed to, but weighs more heavily on women.
FishFace@piefed.socialtoData is Beautiful@lemmy.world•The most male and female reasons to be admitted to the hospitalEnglish
14·1 day agoMy interpretation was drugs which are CNS depressants or paralytics. A benzo overdose presumably falls into this category, maybe also opioids. It can’t include alcohol though, because people drinking until paralytic is not an overwhelmingly female phenomenon (I believe it is currently pretty even)

Git@programming.dev•Serie: A rich git commit graph in your terminalEnglish
2·1 day agoFalls into a weird niche for me - if I’m in a situation where text-only history is not good enough, I’ll just use something graphical, rather than some crazy image-in-terminal solution.
Mostly in
gitI use an alias I wrote/stole ages ago which displays linear history compactly.

News@lemmy.world•U.S. citizen shot from behind as he warned ICE agents about children gathering at bus stop, lawyers sayEnglish
22·1 day agoMy point, all along, is that ICE shouldn’t be behaving how they are, at all, it’s fucked.
And you felt the need to make that point, repeatedly, when no-one disagreed with it. And you won’t even begin to talk about why.
Yes, I think we absolutely need to make a decision between true things and false things. I don’t give a shit what country you associate that habit with because it’s so clearly important and positive. You’ll have to actually respond to me if you want to convince me that it is anything other than vital in today’s “post-truth” landscape.
