  • The relevant concept here is Extraterritoriality: is Harker subject to the laws of the land in which he is working, or to the laws of his citizenship (England)? Harker is not there in a diplomatic capacity, so he would be subject to the laws of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the County of Dracula.

Count Dracula could claim that as administrator of that region, he was ensuring Harker’s safety by limiting his movements to a “safe zone” – this was/is common practice in dangerous areas. He could also claim that he removed certain business documents after Harker was caught attempting to exfiltrate information in encrypted form – Dracula could claim that he did do so to protect his personal business information. I’m not an expert on the legal system of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 1800s, but my intuition is that rural nobility had a pretty wide latitude in what they could do.

  • Not contenting himself with false imprisonment, now we see Dracula committing theft.

It’s still not clear that Dracula is doing anything illegal here, as an aristocratic ruler in his hereditary lands. However, clearly Harker is not up to the task at hand and his company has not adequately prepared him for this mission. Dracula would be better off just dropping him off in the nearest village and then contracting a different attorney. Or, if he was really malicious, just letting Harker wander around the forest as he so desires until a wolf ate him.

I didn’t say anything about gender, and I agree with everything in your comment. In addition, I maintain that the original post’s divide-and-conquer victim-blaming is one of the worst possible takes on the fact that accessing mental health care (in the US) is harder than performing esoteric medieval alchemy.

    All right, either:

    • try to decide what kind of therapist is needed (difficult)
    • figure out what kind of therapy/therapists are covered by insurance (time-consuming and stressful, sometimes impossible)
    • provide a bunch of private information (time-consuming, difficult, and stressful)
    • look through a list of relevant therapists nearby (usually easy)
    • try to identify one that you might relate to or at least be able to deal with (very difficult, sometimes impossible)
    • call them up one at a time to see if they’re really accepting new patients (time-consuming and stressful)
    • try to find a regular time that works in your schedule for the new therapist and for other obligations (difficult)
    • again provide a bunch of private information (time-consuming, difficult, and stressful)
    • go meet with the therapist. try to get along with them because if you don’t it’s your fault and you have to start all over (difficulty varies, sometimes impossible)
    • do all this while dealing with whatever problem you need therapy for (difficulty varies, sometimes impossible)

    Or:

I know the wording’s a meme, but the hell with whoever made the original post. Fuckem.
