  • I know a couple of people who just had to pass a written test (basic multiple choices test on sign recognition and road laws) and no behind the wheel test. Heck my wife’s best friend lived somewhere where one person out of every class could get their license without any behind the wheel test. They’d draw names out of a hat and the lucky individual just had to pass the written test

With how dangerous cars are, retesting and recertification should be required with every renewal. An hour or two of class time to cover “here’s what’s new this decade” plus a 20 minute behind the wheel test would filter a lot of people who really shouldn’t be driving away from their licenses

On the other hand, there’s a ton of people who drive without a valid license regularly due to barriers to getting one and infrastructure that prevents any alternative method of getting around, so this would probably just exacerbate this issue

About 2 years ago I spent most of a Christmas sorting out my MIL’s new laptop, uninstalling junk and whatnot, and I tossed ublock origin on there. A few days ago I came back to sort out the Realtek audio drivers which uninstalled themselves via Windows Update. I find she has an entirely different laptop now, branded as"Acemagic" but through the magic of forced Microsoft Sign-in ublock origin synced to Edge on this new laptop, and there was no crapware installed despite the laptop clearly being in use for about 6 months already!

TL;DR install ublock origin on your parents computers to save yourself some trouble down the line

  • At my last workplace one of my colleagues took a couple of days off per week for 3 weeks to participate in some robotics competitions. He was teased and generally made aware how much of an inconvenience his planned absence was.

This same workplace made up a reason to fire me just because they didn’t like me. I can make a million and one guesses as to why I was actually fired, but the most telling part is they didn’t even stick to the reasons they provided for firing me when I applied for unemployment and the unemployment office called to verify details with them. They dropped all of the pretense they built up and basically just said I wasn’t a good fit for the team. I may or may not qualify for unemployment, I should find out soon.

Fortunately I’ve been doing some contact work for my previous employer on the side so I’ve been able to make that my main gig to try to keep the bills paid. I’m not sure what I’d be doing right now if I didn’t have that, given this job market is so terrible right now. I’ve been applying for 5-10 jobs a week for the last 6 weeks and I’ve had a single interview

  • All of the books are worth reading! Start with the short stories then move onto the longform books. There’s also a collection of Audible rips floating around the high seas too that are quite high quality. Also for how much of a reputation the brand has for salaciousness, the books are actually quite tame most of the time, and some of the stories are clearly inspired by the same source material as many of the classic Disney princess movies.

Honestly I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the Netflix media for The Witcher too. Blood origin was a fun prequel, and the animes do a good job of giving kind an alternate approach to the series that’s equally good.

  • I’ll slow down to exactly the speed limit (which because my speedometer is ~2MPH fast means going slightly below the limit) if someone honks at me for going too slowly. I’ll also specifically not turn right until it’s green if someone behind me honks to turn right on red

I’m a pretty chill driver. I don’t speed, I don’t aggressively lane change or push lights, but if someone thinks their horn will get me drive in a less safe manner I will happily slow them down just a little bit more. If they don’t honk, I’ll happily make it easy for them to pass when it is safe

  • Lifting seems like effort without the fun of a game.

The fun is in learning your muscles, feeling them shift and move as you put new strain on them and ultimately improving. Any metric you can track for improvement gives you a big source of pride when you hit a new milestone. Maybe it’s more reps. Maybe it’s a bigger weight with the same number of reps. Maybe it’s a new more difficult exercise you can do. Maybe you’re aiming to join a local competition. There’s always a goal to work towards and you can watch your body get better as you work on it. There’s incredible magic in knowing the control you have over your body’s shape, and suddenly being able to join in races or competitions that you might have used to be annoyed by how they get in your way.

I’ve gone big into biking. I started out struggling to make it around the block (which includes a big hill because where I live there really isn’t any flat surfaces to bike on) and last week I hit 12 miles in one go, and that’s including quite a few hills, some I powered up standing on the pedals, and some I powered through going as slowly as I needed and just continuing to pedal and push through. Every week or two I can achieve a new best for the season or even a new personal best, and that’s just tracking distance. I could instead focus on increasing my average speed. Or I could download an app where I race other people on the same route in virtual time trials.

  • Dude, I picked up biking last season and on Monday I biked a new personal best of 12 very hilly miles without a rest. I decided literally the night before to join a local 4th of July 5k without any training (literally said “I can bike 12 miles, what’s running 3? Those are similar enough muscles!” and I’ve been riding the high since because my leg muscles are still all sore and tight in all of the wonderful “I pushed my limits and achieved something!” kind of ways that make me feel so alive!
