People on this site spent weeks speculating about battle plans, drawing maps etc. for Venezuela, and none of it mattered. I doubt the US should be any more conventional in how they deal with China

Private meeting between Hilary Cass and NHS Sheffield Children’s Foundation Trust leaked by Trans Kids Deserve Better. Original post (instagram): https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSf3rqbDhq0/

I was asked previously to give an update on trans UK stuff at some point, but the government is being very secretive about future trans policy / law at the moment so there’s not really been any big “story” yet. Things are still gradually getting worse for trans people but the feeling I get is the negative response to new government policy / the supreme court decision was greater than expected so they’re reassessing strategy. Feelings aren’t news though, and a lot of the smaller ‘real’ stuff doesn’t feel worthy of a newspost. This at least provides an insight into how Cass / the NHS is looking at the ongoing crisis of transgender healthcare in the UK, but it’s also not terribly surprising at this point.

Ads are just the tools of propaganda turned inward for the benefit of the market, right? I think we’d need more consciousness on just how much propaganda there is, and how much of society / our world is shaped by it, before there’s a strong anti-ad backlash in general.

I think the bankrolling and media slant does a lot to paper over the less-charismatic elements of the far-right

They’re right that Calibri sucks, but they should just move to Aptos instead of going back to TNR. I guess serif fonts are seen as more “masculine” or w/e

Is there any good analysis as to how it got this way? Like obviously newspapers etc. but as someone not plugged in how did it get so bad so fast?

what’s your favourite titles so far?

It’s been said a bit already, but new smartphone releases are so much more similar to previous versions than ever before. The jump from iPhone to iPhone 3G, to 4(s) to 5, 6, 7, etc. each felt meaningful in those earlier days - same with samsung’s galaxy S series - but now I (someone ostensibly interested in tech) could not tell you any reason to get an iPhone 17 over an iPhone 13 besides “it’s a bit faster” and “it’ll support the latest OS for a bit longer”.
I actually did my due diligence and looked up the iPhone 17 to see what the main selling points were. Lo and behold - the camera / battery are better, and the on-board chip is faster. They actually have a section where you can compare it to previous iPhones - for the 13, it has a (“up to”) “50% faster CPU”, a “2.1x faster” (so 110%?) GPU, and “10 more hours of video playback”. Given the iPhone 13 is already pretty good at those things, and these are cherry-picked results, I can’t see a real use-case for these unless you’re gaming or have a seriously heavy workload you need a phone to tackle with a long time between recharges.

I remember when I played through Deus Ex for the first time, I thought it laughable the internet could be brought down by destroying a single facility. Well, we’ve still got 25 years of centralization to go until then…

Never have understood why violence but pretend was an ok fictional genre tbh
you ever think about what pokémon smell like?

This is just typical Aspyr. They flew under the radar back when their bread and butter was shitty mac ports (looking at you, KOTOR and Civ 6) but have gotten more attention since they started doing bare-bones remasters of otherwise fantastic games.

The EHRC put out some statutory guidance (aka binding in law) which made things broadly worse for trans people for a little while, but has since been downgraded to the non-legally-binding kind due to legal challenges1. The chair of the EHRC got thrown out and replaced with an about equally transphobic chair who has been quietly working on the new guidance. Word is it’s being released soon, but right now everyone’s just waiting to see what it says. Some / many private companies have used the opportunity to make their policies more transphobic in the meantime, so things are de-facto worse for trans people than they were before, but the full impact (in law) hasn’t landed yet.
1 It’s a bit more complicated than this (I’m not a lawyer), but I do remember they tried to do take-backsies later and say it was never statutory guidance (despite originally calling it that)
