And in general, because of the way the protocol works, you could easily build a new app and just use the data that Bluesky wrote. So another platform wouldn’t even need users to “migrate”, since it’s “being your own data”

Just because BlueSky isn’t federated doesn’t mean it’s (totally) centralized. It uses the AT protocol which means user data lives in a separate place than the app itself. While the BlueSky app is centralized all the user data (your posts, likes, etc) live in a separate place and can be self-hosted. This means that if BlueSky went bust or something, users could easily just move to a new platform that someone would inevitably create and all of their data, likes, follows would all be there.

It’s a water-cooled SFF build so thermals can be an issue. Maybe somewhere something is getting too hot, it’s a decent theory. I’ll try building up a bunch of heat in the case to see if that increases instability. Thanks!

Interesting… I’ve used 2 different CPUs in this system over the years and the crashing has been across both - so it’s probably not that. I think I’ve also swapped ram at some point, but that’s easy so I’ll just re-seat it to bu sure. I don’t think I’ve ever touched the GPU so maybe re-seating it & the riser would help. Worth a try, at least. Thanks!

It’s a SFF case so I can only use SFX psu instead of normal sized ones. That limits my options a lot, but I’ll see if I can’t find a bigger one.

Interesting, it’s a bit hard to test as the crashes are super un-reproducable. (I don’t think I’ve ever been able to produce a crash with a synthetic benchmark or the like). Any recommendations for testing? Or do I just have to run the system for a while in each state and keep track myself?

Yeah. I’ve been desperately avoiding trying the GPU directly in the slot since the whole thing is water cooled w/ a custom loop and I don’t want to drain & re-plumb it. I might have to though, ugh. Next PC I build is going to be 100% air cooled haha

It’s about 4 years old, so not new but not crazy old. I’m also in a SFF case so I’m using a PCIE riser, which could also be the issue. Do you know, is there a way to tell if it’s the riser or the PSU? I can run memtest to check the memory.

I imagine it’s getting enough airflow. It’s a sff case, but the fans blow right over the PSU so it’s probably fine… Would there be a way to tell if it’s overheating?

Do you think 750W would cut it? Corsair makes a 750W version of the PSU I’m using so it would be an easy drop-in replacement

Yeah seems like a good move, Corsair makes a 750W version of this PSU that’s comparable with the same cables - so I could swap without even having to re-do my cable runs! Seems like it’s worth a try. Hopefully I can get it somewhere local though, as I hate returning stuff in the mail. Thanks!

You could try getting a Chromebook and installing whatever distro you want on there? I know it doesn’t avoid the pre-installed spyware, but at least it’s free so you’re not loosing money paying for a license. And Chromebooks these days are made in a wide range from very inexpensive to sorta-premium.

I’ve been doing typelit.io and typing out a whole book, which I think is helping since it’s a more realistic typing scenario. I’d love to see your layout if you’re willing to share, I’m always interested in seeing peoples’ different approaches.

I was at about 80 WPM before I’d say. In the beginning and when I first made this post I was putting in at least an hour of practice every day. After this post I hit a wall the practice stopped yielding as much improvement which hurt my motivation. I’m still sticking with it though, and since 60 is fast enough to work without issue, I figure my speed will improve naturally over time.

I’m still enjoying the journey, and I’ve been having fun getting function layers working and trying to work my way towards eliminating keys!

Not much yet. I’m improving now at a super slow rate, but it’s mostly a measurement issue. In the real world, I’ve noticed improvement that isn’t reflected in speed tests alone. My accuracy is still the biggest thing holding me back. When I get a good streak going I can get pretty quick, but it’s wrecked when I have to go back and fix a typo.

Thanks, I think those early speed gains were exciting so I wanted to keep that up but it’s not totally realistic. Doing day-to-day stuff and building speed over time makes sense though.

It’s been about 3 weeks. Yeah that makes sense, I do feel like I’ve noticed that while my speed test results are not changing as fast, my ability to actually do stuff has been getting better.

Thanks all who replied and shared their experiance! For now, I’m going to learn colemak dh and keep trying on the learning curve. From what I’ve tried so far, it seems like my problems with the ortho keyboard were mostly due to my bad form on qwerty. Now that I’m learning colemak (with proper form) it seems like I can pretty much swap between ortho and staggered without much issue. Now I just have to build the muscle memory for the new layout!

By layout on 1 do you mean the actual changed keyboard shape (ortho etc) or the layout of the letters (ie colemak)? I actually feel less worried about changing away from QWERTY since I can always configure that on my laptop, but I can’t change the physical shape of my laptop keyboard haha!
