  • Update from Simon aka imsodin, Syncthing Maintainer

tl;dr for android users: No need to switch apps at this time, the current install continues to work and is safe. If you can disable app auto-updates, please do that for now to be on the safe side.

Good news: Had a good chat with @nel0x. He is a collaborator on researchxxl’s repo and just marked those releases as “pre-release”, which prevents the obtainium auto-upgrades. So we are back to no immediate risk for users and we can take it slowly, trying to establish communication and more context. It’s still possible and imo likely that nothing nefarious is going on, just a very suboptimal handover that needs clearing up. There’s no need to go dig for repos on github, the technicalities of continuing to publish an app are not an issue - the open/relevant points are about a possible direct continuation of the existing app (or not), the time/effort that needs to be volunteered to publish an app and the trust in whoever does that. Hopefully we can work something out. If you are interested in helping maintain the app, let us know, other than that imo nothing to do here except if you are a user, to do the above in the tl;dr and every now and then check-in on the status (now and then being more like every week than every hour 😉 ).

  • Sounds like a really good reason not to use Obtainium, if any repo you have tracked for updates can just redirect you to a completely different repo If they have the keys - and throw no complaints when updating to an entirely different apk.

With F-Droid they at least have to have the same signing keys, and the code must be a replicable build by F-Droid’s internal apk signature copying process - meaning the code for the supplied APK always matches the code on the repository for the build.

Yeah dogs just allowed themselves to be subjugated… except there are over 4 million dog bites recorded each year, and 25,000 human deaths from dog attack.

Cats: occasional accidental death by infectious bacteria after bites. Not enough annual kills to even bother being tracked.

  • Where have Steam said they are partnering with a company to offer replacement parts? As far as I’ve read, Valve have not provided any details around sourcing replacement batteries for the Steam Controller. All they’ve said is that the controller is able to be serviced by opening via the screws and clips - ie it’s not glued closed like many user-hostile companies, eg Google Stadia.

This is in no way the same as old smart phones (eg Galaxy S1-S5) toolless battery replacement, where you would just slide off the battery cover, pop out the old battery insert new, click battery cover back on. PS3 Dualschock 3 controllers are also exactly as user-serviceable - clips and screws, no glue. So I agree with OP: batteries that are built for toolless user replacement to a standard format are far superior. This is just asking for e-waste.

You mean like complaining on the Internet about a throwaway joke in a webcomic?

The Friends dig was just a utilitarian punchline for the comic to add some comedy to the informative nature of the first panel. I dunno why people take things to heart so much when there really are so, so many better shows than Friends. The comic doesn’t even say that Friends is bad, just that there’s better. Show viewing options have expanded and improved a lot since 1994.

Some people don’t mind sharing the land they have with them. Especially as the land available to wildlife decreases year on year.

Personally I’ll take insects and native rodents over sterile trimmed grass any day, especially for the front yard which doesn’t even get used aside from a ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ style lawn and garden manicure unspoken competition.

  • The same reality where GPT5’s launch a couple months back was a massive failure with users and showed a lot of regression to less reliable output than GPT4? Or perhaps the reality where most corporations that have used AI found no benefit and have given up reported this year?

LLMs are good tools for some uses, but those uses are quite limited and niche. They are however a square peg being crammed into the round hole of ‘AGI’ by Altman etc while they put their hands out for another $10bil - or, more accurately while they make a trade swap deal with MS or Nvidia or any of the other AI orobouros trade partners that hype up the bubble for self-benefit.

  • I think you are enormously overestimating their abilities to:

    A) reflect on poor management decisions that hurt users. They have increased their company valuation TEN-fold under Satya Nadella over the last 11 years, and his push to cannibalise the hosted-services partners and Gold partners with Azure/365 made them a lot of ground before then. They became the second company ever to reach a valuation of $3T back in 2024. If you think a (globally) handful of unhappy home OS users will cause then to change course - I don’t think so, certainly never been my experience with MS.

    B) win back most of the users they have lost to Windows. Why would those users return? They have what they need with their new solutions, and moving to them was a time and education cost that they have now fully paid, they’re invested. They’d have to have something very compelling to bring them back beyond, "hey guys we stopped being shit! ######for now "
