I’m the developer of a desktop-first Lemmy client called Alexandrite.

Oops forgot to post links, I edited the post.
I host Alexandrite at https://alexandrite.app/ and several instances also host Alexandrite on their own domains, like https://a.lemmy.world
Yes, launching the game launches Ubisoft’s launcher and you have to sign into that to play.
Also if you use Proton it doesn’t auto close the launcher when you quit the game so it’ll run up your play time while the launcher is minimized to the system tray.
You can link to communities/users by typing the full name/instance stuff out, but I don’t have any search/auto-complete stuff for either of those yet.
Oh yeah, I added a few hotkeys too, forgot to mention that! You can find them documented on the hotkey help page.
Nope, it does everything client-side as of about a month ago.
I think this UI looks neat, totally room out there for both of them! :) I think it actually looks a bit closer to Photon. I’m always down for more apps because we all benefit from new ideas.
Another random reply to an old comment! I’ve got a branch out for self hosting Alexandrite if you happened to be interested in trying it out at all, more info on this post.
I’m not sure, I get the comment count from one place, and the list of comments from another, so it’s the server saying there are two comments but then not giving me any. I’ve seen on the official ui that sometimes the comment count doesn’t match how many comments I see (like on the lemmy.world crosspost of that it says there are 3 but shows me two), so I just assumed it’s a bug on the Lemmy side but maybe I’m wrong.
I mostly browse on desktop, but wasn’t a big fan of the main site, so I made my own one called Alexandrite that I think is more convenient to use. I use Voyager on my phone and I’m excited for Sync to release.
If anyone’s curious here’s one of my announcement posts, and another that includes mod tools.
Eventually I want to add a light theme, but it’ll probably be a while yet.
(I’m the dev of Alexandrite) Officially there isn’t yet a way to self-host it without modifying the code (unless you host it on one of a few specific cloud providers like the official Alexandrite site does), but now that people are self hosting anyway I think adding support for it is going to be higher up on my priority list!
I never had considered before a few days ago that someone would host Alexandrite alongside their instance so it never occurred to me that someone might first interact with Lemmy through Alexandrite. I will definitely add registration!
Thanks!
See my other comment about self hosting, as it’s probably not super easy right now.
The site uses Sveltekit and so far every interaction with Lemmy happens server side, so it’s probably not as easy to host as WefWef. I got partway through implementing image uploading yesterday until I hit a bug (fix just got merged today!) that prevented that, but image uploading is going to happen client side so it doesn’t cause extra server load.
Thanks!
The username/password are just used once to login and get an auth token and that auth token is stored in a cookie. The username is also stored in a cookie, but the password is not. Here’s the login code
Yes you can! However the production version currently uses Sveltekit’s adapter-auto which just runs on various cloud platforms, so it might not be that easy to self host without changes. You can run the dev version of the site by cloning it, running npm install
and npm run dev
and viewing it at http://localhost:5173/ but that won’t be as optimized so your page load would be slower.
If you want to self host, would a docker image make it easier?
Alexandrite has a typo in the name! (I’m the creator btw)
I am still around, but I’ve always been a lurker. Just saw the notification so I’m a couple days late. I do see mentions!
