Just casually scrolling, I saw a few that modify movement and a few cheat mods that go so far as to just allow you to teleport places. Obviously just teleporting around would lessen the surprises the game offers, so I’d recommend that as an actual last resort.

It’s possible I just haven’t come across those types of comments you’re making fun of, but I usually just see people making the case that we don’t need new, possibly overreaching, legislation to handle these situations. They want to avoid a disingenuous “think of the children” kind of situation.

I’m not familiar with their legal system but I would be willing to bet the crimes they’ve committed were already illegal under existing laws.

This and the Send Me to Heaven app (throw your phone as high as you can, higher height means higher score) were two of my favorite early apps clearly designed to mess with people buying expensive devices as status symbols.

The apps hadn’t been so thoroughly ruined by Match Group yet. OKCupid used to publish interesting detailed reports about dating habits. Plenty of Fish wasn’t full of bots and scammers. The apps that charged you for basic features were largely avoided. The experience was weird and new.

The dating app landscape as it is now is basically just whichever is the latest one until Match acquires it.

I’m sure the chance at getting some with high lead content makes it taste even better.

IIRC DreamWorks originally tried adapting the book directly but it didn’t really work so they kept some concepts and redid the entire story. Early designs of movie Shrek looked a lot closer to book Shrek.

The fun thing is that people say “I graduated” or “I’m graduating” but it’s technically more correct to say “I am being graduated (by the university).” I might be mixing it up a bit, but the idea is that the university always has the final say over whether or not you get that important piece of paper at the end.

One of my teachers in high school taught us this, but I never actually thought I’d see it in action. It’s cruel.

I ran across software once that wouldn’t compile properly and the only documentation available was an archive.org hosted backup of an Intel help page that no longer exists. There is no alternative, Intel just removed it entirely.

I think their design philosophy is also probably playing a part in dropping player counts. The progression treadmill is severely hindered by their wish that weapons be weak to encourage players to depend on stratagems. Their passes are filled with lackluster guns and armor that isn’t really all that different from what players already have. They add a few new stratagems here and there, but not nearly enough to keep people grinding for new ones.

I would argue that a sizeable number of players can only grind out the same missions over and over with little tangible progression to show for it for so long.

That plus their ever growing pile of technical debt.

I have a theory it’s part of the same effort that’s resulting in some Sony-published games getting PlayStation trophy support on PC. They probably want to eventually accomplish something similar to what Microsoft did with cross-platform services between the Microsoft store and Xbox.

It’s like the people who used to put messages about preventing Facebook from using their content in their profile descriptions. It probably won’t actually do anything, but it’s a nice thought and more power to them if it makes them feel better.

Wasn’t that almost what happened with Bryan Lunduke? AFAIK, dude took a hard turn to the right after years of decent Linux-related advocacy and then nuked his social media accounts and tried to claim the opposite. Not sure where he’s at now, but it was pretty strange.

They have a pretty long history of publicly claiming to be best buddies but not-so-secretly despising each other and eyeing each other’s territory.

IIRC it was also commonly thought the Soviet Union and PRC were buddies because Communism but they each claimed to be the true successor to Marx’s ideology and denounced the other as inadequate.

Might be misremembering some parts, it’s been a while since I studied this.

IIRC there used to be custom tilesets/graphics packs, not sure if they’re still maintained after the game launched on Steam.

This is also probably the real reason they’re taking a harder stance against mods. Within 24 hours, there’s already a mod on Nexus that adds one of the items you can buy with real money to an early vendor for like 1 coin.

There’s also another mod that just makes all items 1 coin, so it shouldn’t be too hard for modders to just completely circumvent the bullshit mtx.
