1:1 calls are pretty straightforward to implement with webrtc. Nice to see they are doing it.

If you wanna see if a server supports it just put in your servers URL into this handy matrix server tester.
If the server has something related to “livekit” in the .well-known section then its most likely supported.

So far only Element Web/Desktop and ElementX have implemented the current gen call system. It also needs to be supported server side so it only works if you are on a homeserver that has set up element-call. (Many have at this point, but far from all)
In Element X its the only available call system, in the desktop version you need to click on the video/camera icon and select “Element Call” to use it.

This systems is super smart and can distribute the load across multiple homeservers when you have large calls with like 100+ participants.

Very cool project. The app seems to be open source too. Sadly the web version seems to be very badly coded and just completely freezes for multiple seconds when you zoom in/out while looking around.

I used it years ago and it worked quite well even back then. If you just need a messenger then its not bad at all imo. I dont know how it scales when running a server for 10000+ users (every message is a new email so the load is probably a lot higher than for a normal email server), but its probably fine.

The main reason why i dont use it over matrix is the very mature VOIP stack that Element/Matrix is using. I basically completely replaced classic phone calling and other video conferencing stuff with matrix.

Its not the best test imo. He only did 500 charge cycles which is more like 1.5 years worth of charge cycles. But even having data for 2 years isnt very useful. If you replace your phone after 2 years then there is no need to care about battery life at all. This whole thing of preserving battery life is something for people that want to use a phone for 5+ years without needing a new battery.

The whole introduction to his video is “there is a saying”, so all he had to do was actually look at the research where that “saying” came from. Then he could have still run his little experiment in an attempt to replicate parts of the study. Instead he basically told the viewers “if you throw away your phone after 2 years, then you dont need to care about charging limits” which is very useless information.

After 1500 cycles the difference between the 5-100% and 30-80% system would be so drastic that you wouldnt be able to really use the first one, while the other one would still work decently well.

Als PDF bekommst du das ticket ja eh immernoch, also wirklich gezwungen ist man zu der app ja NOCH nicht.

Die Bahn will halt eins auf elitär machen um die Preise zu rechtfertigen. Die App ist auch voll mit Google Analytics und läuft auf einigen degoogled Geräten nicht richtig, was beides komplett inakzeptabel ist finde ich.
