it’s been awhile since i dove into Linux, but last time i dabbled i was liking Kubuntu.

just remember, at some point, two dudes had a barroom bet. one of them insisted that ‘anyone can make a movie’. in the course of proving his point, he spent $19,000 and made a film that some consider to be one of the worst movies ever made.

he was right though.

at some point i hope people do start to realize that open source means they get worked on by people, when they feel like it.

that cuts both ways. for some things it’s great, for some things it’s not. the end result can be great, but sometimes it takes a REALLY long time to get there.

i wouldn’t sweat it, they really didn’t build lemmy either. :D

personally, i’ve got more important shit going on that what phone people are using. in the case of this phone, it looks like any other number of Android phones with a custom theme.

i’m assuming it’s more than that, but it still looks a bit silly. you can be minimalist and still appreciate things like color.

i don’t think we should act like journalism was in a great place before.

FB capitalized on a weakened industry, but it was the industry itself that was responsible for that state.

they really fucked themselves by not transitioning to the new market, instead insisting that it was the customers that were wrong. all these years later, i’ve yet to see a news outlet that would be worth the subscription fee. they’re mostly recycling content from other, free sites anyway.

once the older crowd passes, traditional news outlets are done for. the ones that remain will be the ones that were providing the content all along.

generally computers won’t stop doing things they were already capable of doing. tons of machines and businesses may rely on older hardware and software to complete specific tasks.

but yeah, a 486 is pretty past its prime, and the task could have been accomplished on something far more modern.

phones and tablets are fine for consuming media. they are noticeably worse at creating it.

i couldn’t imagine typing out long responses, sometimes with links, with a phone or tablet.

as for how many consumers still use PCs, hard to say. i know i don’t go a single day without using mine. whether it’s to play a game, type up a guide for someone to do something, or whatever else. on the flip of that, i also own a ultrabook that i use when i’m away from home. it’s capable of doing many things, but it’s no where near as capable as my desktop setup.

we had to get one for a young dog we took in. he was used to food being scarce, and would gulp down any given to him. the busy bowls make them work for it, so it slows them down a bit.

My dad has been using my old 6S until recently. We bumped him up to a 8 I recently quit using.

Currently I’m using an 11 Pro. Great phone.

as much as i disagree with him on certain things, Mike Rowe had a good point with a vid he did a long time ago. sometimes your passion isn’t what will pay what you need. it can still be your passion, but you might need to look elsewhere for what you want to do for a living. what he was getting at was to not overlook new things, that you might actually like as a job, even if it wasn’t your passion.

for example, few people choose HVAC repair as a passion, but it pays well, and might be stimulating for someone looking for a technical type job.

personally my passion is working with computers, but it can be hard to make a living at it, at least at a consumer level. but the thing is i really like helping the average joe find GOOD ways to spend their money. i’d have loved to have graduated college and worked on enterprise grade stuff, but i have a learning disability and can’t pass Algebra. this means i can’t get my degree.

They’ve been doing it for a very long time now. I’m currently using a 2015 model, Dell Tablet. It has Linux support. Cost me about $250 (with a copy of W10 Pro), a few years back. I also got it with the hard shell keyboard dock, effectively making it a net book.

It’s been a great device, but probably isn’t what OP is looking for.

that’s because it wasn’t. it still isn’t. the best hardware in the world won’t do anything for you if there’s no software to use it. with the iVRy dev working on this, and with Sony’s announcement, they probably realized it was a inevitability for someone to crack the software problem.

not every joke is going to land with everyone. sometimes they’re not even jokes, just pointing out absurdities.

if they don’t land with you, i wouldn’t stress it. sometimes the humor is extremely nerdy. it’s like the Far Side or Monty Python. it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s OK.

simple misunderstanding. you see in the eyes of the court, he’s innocent until proven guilty. in the eyes of the police officer, there are no innocents, only suspects.

my fave is when they hassle some normal person, and even after finding they did nothing wrong, or were guilty of no crimes, the police will refer to them as a suspect, like you see here.

like they’ll run a search warrant or something and then say, well the person was suspected of having marijuana. did the person actually have anything? no. but he was suspected of it.

pigs eat shit, and i can probably count on one hand the number of them i know that i would be sad if something happened to them. the overwhelming majority of them could suddenly cease to exist and the country would be a MUCH better place for it.
