Didn’t have a proper jar on hand so improvised with a coffee jar 😅

I love Apple Butter!! Apples were on sale for $2 a bag last week so I got extra and made apple butter out of a bag. I use a crock pot. 1 bag of apples peeled, cored, and rough chunked with some brown and white sugar, cinnamon, and touch of salt. Cook for 10 hours.

Apple butter is basically spiced applesauce that is cooked down more with a looser texture. Apple jam is going to be a lot stiffer in texture and typically isn’t as spiced if at all in my experience. Honestly I’d still call what OP made Apple butter by the look of it

I’m sure it does! Little trick that I use is after I’ve mashed down the cooked apples and put the pot in the oven I’ll put a wooden spoon just inside the oven door so the moisture can escape

In addition to what was already said, you can make other fruit butters as well, not just apple. Pear, peach, and plum butter are all common.

Subjectively, I also find it a lot easier to spread on bread than jam.

Looks good! You already know that anticipated extra can be frozen? I‘ve done that successfully with batches too big to eat right away but too small to carry out a full processing operation.

We got a basket of apples for free and made apple sauce (which we put in the freezer), and apple jam (we had a leftover pack of preservation sugar that needed to get used).

Nice one! Enjoy it. You’ve got apple trees and they’re fruitful? I envy you 😂

Lol I thought I was the only one having problems with this app 😅

I didn’t realise you had to wait until the apples turn slightly brown and THEN that’s when you smush them into apple butter, I got too impatient lol, next time for sure! Freeze them? Sounds good to me.

Yeah something is wrong with the app - I got error messages and didn’t think my post went through.

My apples turn brown while running them through a food processor before cooking. So I give some finely minced lemon a good half hour simmer start. When adding the brown apples the magically are no longer brown!
