The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on 14 November condemning the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, and related practices promoting racism and intolerance.

The Russia-backed resolution received 114 votes in favor, 52 against, and 12 abstentions.

It calls for supporting global efforts to combat Nazi ideology, including opposition to monuments for Waffen-SS members and denial of Nazi crimes.

Western nations such as the US, EU members, Ukraine, Canada, and Australia voted against the resolution.

The delegation of the EU to the UN issued a statement explaining its rationale for doing so.

The statement claimed that the Russia has sought to justify its 2022 invasion and occupation of territory in Ukraine on the “purported basis of eliminating neo-Nazism,” but this was only a “pretext to justify territorial aggression,” which “seriously undermines genuine attempts to combat neo-Nazism.”

Supporters of the measure, including China and India, viewed it as a stand against extremism.

The resolution has been voted on every year since 2012, when 129 nations voted in support, and only the US, Canada, and Palau voted against.

Journalist Alan MacLeod noted that the US remains the only country to vote “no” to the resolution every time since 2012.

In 2014, the US supported far-right and neo-Nazi groups to carry out a violent coup against the pro-Russian government of Ukraine, led by then-president Viktor Yanukovych. The coup involved the use of false flag snipers to kill at least 100 anti-government protestors, and then blame the killings on police units loyal to the president.

After Yanukovych’s ouster, pro-US candidate Petro Poroshenko took power and launched a war against pro-Russian Ukrainians in the Donbass region in the east of the country.

The US voted against it for 2 years BEFORE the right-wing coup of Ukraine. thonk
