    Yo, this guy deserves a federal holiday. I’m sure the current administration would love to have a day to celebrate a famous Republican veteran who had to make his own bootstraps before he could even pull himself up by them…

      I acknowledge your snark, but he had a fort until the '40s, one of the largest ships in the Army, and now the cruiser formerly known as Chancellorsville. Seems about right.

    I’m an audio editor / producer for a family-friendly radio drama program, and we made a story on his life a few years ago. The dude really was awesome, it was one of my favorite stories to work on.

    It’s not free to listen to (unless you happen to catch it on the radio when that episode happens to be airing), but you can listen to a 30-second snippet here. (It’s the first story on the album, “From Slave to Hero”.)

    I’m from South Carolina, and I worked with one of his proud descendents. It’s a wonder they never made a movie about him.
