seems like it’s 97% memes or news articles. i love a good shitpost but this site would be even better with in depth nuanced discussion – especially with a higher quality userbase than reddit

No, I’ve blocked more communities since coming here than I would prefer. Just scrolling the All Hot feed sometimes looking for new stuff is really annoying. Theres an especially weird problem with hentai. I’ve blocked I swear like 40 communities, and they all could have been one single community, bcz when you click into the community, it’s one person posting over and over.

You’re not alone. Thank fuck you said it. People create a whole new community where a single post would have achieved as much. It’s waaaay too broken down over here. I have had to block comms for each English premier league team, each fucking one. And pretty much empty comms apart from dead threads on match results.

Yeah, it’s annoying having to block a dozen communities for the same subject, especially since you have to face the same issue for every server! I finally broke down and stopped using Jerboa and started using Sync, just because it has great blocking features. You can block by username, community, by server, and by keyword. I have a bunch of keywords blocked. “Trump, Elon Musk, Politics, Democrat, Republican, Twitter”, and a couple dozen more keywords are blocked for me because of how annoyingly pervasive they are. Some stuff still slips through, but because it’s not a constant onslaught, I actually enjoy it when it does slip through, instead of being constantly bombarded by it.

Are you browsing by all? Subscribe to what you are interested in and just browse that feed.

That way you only get the stuff you want and can target it to directly that (maybe you want imaginary mermaids, but not monsters?)

That works when you have your profile set up,as it were. But communities I want are still absent or being formed, and my subscriptions list is not complete,so I still browse by all to get wind of new ones as they pop up. I cannot wait to retreat from all back to a curated list though.

memes don’t give much discussion but news does. And I mean…

A link aggregator for the fediverse.

Don’t mind text posts though, keep it up

I can’t speak for others, but I know that I’m also much more likely to comment on news posts without so much spin (and that feels like most of the fediverse news links I encounter).

One of the main reasons I got tired of politics on reddit was the agenda-posting / rage bait.

You can block bot posts in your feed. And there are certain instances that are pretty much all bot posts you can just stay away from in general. But I completely agree about them being a problem. Lemmy needs it’s own original content if it’s ever going to succeed. Treating it like a Reddit mirror isn’t going to move our community anywhere.

Gotta have more users for text posts. I don’t know about you guys but if I see a text post with 10 comments I move on unless I have something good to say. I’m way more likely to get involved if 500 comments are already there. Does this make sense? Probably not, but it’s very intuitive.

    • I prefer the opposite because then it’s much more likely to get a response. Something that already has a few hundred or few thousand comments is when I just shitpost snark because it’s not even likely to be seen by anyone other than possibly the OP through getting notifications of replies.

the lemmy sorting is way better though, it seems like something can be at the top of hot even if posted late in the lifespan of a post

Yes, it kind of does. Idk why, but I’m very likely to engage on comments, but very unlikely to be the first person to comment on a post. I recognized this the other day when I clicked a post I wanted to comment on, realized there were no comments, and hit the back button. But then I realized how that’s kind of dumb, and not great behavior for a fledgling website, so I went back and commented.

I’ve seen some legitimately great points here get lots of downvotes. But they get upvotes too and that’s why I hate that most of the good apps for Lemmy have followed the reddit model of combined karma, rather than showing the split karma. It’s terrible for conversations. There’s a big psychological difference between a post with -15 karma, vs a post with 200 upvotes and 215 downvotes.

Avelon lets you choose how you want them to look. I personally have it showing downvotes when it hits controversial territory (25%).

I too prefer to read text posts over articles or videos. But I guess it depends what you follow? My home feed doesn’t have as many articles or videos. Memes sure but I did sign up for that.

I agree with the whole discussion thing so let’s engage. I don’t really think that we have a higher quality userbase than reddit honestly. You have to be a little more tech inclined to even find your way here. I feel like it’s the same thing that happens when you go to university where you will meet a lot of people who just have to be a certain way to even find their way there. I think that lemmy is just way more like minded than a place like reddit. I won’t drone on because I think you get it. So if you want to call that ‘higher quality’ then I agree. Discussion for the point of discussion I suppose

I notice that I tend to do light remarks first – test the waters, you know? Most of the time, IMO, OP just want a light hearted talk, or validation of some kind.

I do agree with the text posts though, and probably would be great to learn from/ contribute to an in-depth talk.

You know what’s cool? Sometimes I get responses on my comments from people that clearly just want to have a conversation. I’ve been conditioned by like buttons and snarky quips for so long that sometimes it takes me a second to stop and realize “oh yeah, I want to have a conversation too! That’s why I’m here!”. It’s pretty neat, and it’s something that I’ve really missed from the old days of the internet (old days? Fuck I’m old and shit). Anyways, I agree with you, we benefit from more meaningful conversations here, and I’m happy to say that I’ve seen more of them here than anywhere else on the Internet at the moment. There’s a forum I’m a member of (thumpertalk.com) that still has pretty good conversations, but mainly only about single cylinder motorcycles. This place has such a wide variety of interest groups that you can start off talking about cats, and end up talking about deep literature. Pretty cool, guys, pretty cool.
