  • Your description of Humane sounds a lot like how I do GTD. You mentioned attention and energy. To me, these are covered by context and capacity in GTD. The context of available attention often factors into what I chose to do next. The energy I currently have affects the capacity I currently have to do a task.

    I think GTD is pretty adaptable, but I think the main important part is capturing tasks and automatically/habitually surfacing them at the right time, so you can keep your mind clear for whatever is important to you to spend your time on.

    I make sure to put dates with my wife on my calendar, and I have not only reflection, but also breaks and goofing off / hobbies as takes on my trusted system. I have a main system for my life, but I also have one with only stuff for work. I only look at the one for work when I’m on the clock. I do have an inbox for thoughts for my whole life, and a separate one for work, but I always have them on me (I use apps on my phone, but I’ve used notecards before).










  • I was parked on the side of PCH and my friend and I were going to cross over to head down to the beach. He crossed in the middle of the road. I continued on to the intersection. Before I got to the intersection, I looked down and found $40 on the ground. There was no one around and no cars nearby. When my friend seemed a bit grumpy for making him wait while I took the long way, I said, “here,” and held out my hand and gave him one of the bills. We went to the nearby punk record store and bought some albums and 45s and ate lunch at a hippie Mexican place.




  • I was unemployed and job hunting for 1½ years. The application and interview process is ridiculously demoralizing.

    My main conclusion I came to is that hardly anyone is skilled at hiring. It’s like a an afterthought and distraction from their primary competencies at work. They don’t know what to ask for, how to ask for it, or how to know if they’re getting what they asked for. I understand how it feels, but don’t let their incompetence get you down if you can help it.

    In the end, I think the two biggest factors in getting hired is who you know that can give you an in, and just plain luck you’ll connect with someone who perceives you as an asset. There is almost nothing you can do about either of these. The rest of what you can do might boost your prospects a bit, but not much. But you’ve got to do them anyway.
