mars296@kbin.socialto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the USA has "national emergencies" still ongoing that date back to 19799·1 year agoProbably because of the Soviets. Dividing up Germany was not without risk. Soviet tanks and American tanks were parked across the boarders from each other with rounds ready to fire.
mars296@kbin.socialto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If people from the US love the imperial system so much, why are their musicians using metronomes instead of footonomes?21·1 year agoIt’s a yardonome you ignorant swine.
mars296@kbin.socialto World News@lemmy.world•Russia says US support for Ukraine will end as ‘humiliating fiasco’ like ‘Vietnam and Afghanistan’111·1 year agoThe Soviets did not send soldiers to battle without weapons. That is a myth. They fought like hell in WW2 and finishing that is stupid.

mars296@kbin.socialto Technology@lemmy.ml•New Windows driver blocks software from changing default web browser152·1 year agoAre tech illiterate people intentionally using 3rd party software to change their default browser? Genuinely asking because I have always manually set my default on a new device.
mars296@kbin.socialto Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Dutch police have detained activist Greta Thunberg at a climate demonstration in The Hague37·1 year agoThe person you are responding to is not arguing in good faith. I was going to say don’t feed the troll but maybe it’s better to refute the BS so unsuspecting people don’t read them thinking they are correct.
mars296@kbin.socialto HistoryPorn@lemmy.world•French woman pouring cider for a British soldier, WW2, 194415·1 year agoHe looks British to me. He is using a Bren gun and you can see the start of visor(?) that British helmets have but it’s obscured by his pack.
mars296@kbin.socialto Banned Book Club@literature.cafe•Georgia Senate passes bill banning American Library Association from state libraries1·1 year agoI’ll never understand trying juveniles as adults. Then what is the point of even having juvenile courts? There is a 13 year oldkid in Florida who killed his mother and is being tried as an adult. I understand it was a terrible crime but treating a middle school kid with the brain/reasoning ability of a 13 year old child as an adult is wrong.
I find that people generally use “this” and “next” correctly but it depends how the week is being perceived. I think it might depend what day of the week it currently is. Like if it’s Sunday, someone might say “next Saturday” to mean the first coming Saturday. But if someone says “next Saturday” on a Thursday they definitely mean the second coming Saturday.

mars296@kbin.socialto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that gets a lot of hate for absolutely no reason?241·1 year agoNot necessarily. They could be down voted because what they mentioned is hated for a good reason. Like if someone posts “Nazis” or “cancer”.
mars296@kbin.socialto Open Source@lemmy.ml•Spotube: An open source, cross-platform Spotify client69·1 year agoI don’t really see any false advertising. It is explicitly described as exactly what it is.
“An open source, cross-platform Spotify client compatible across multiple platforms utilizing Spotify’s data API and YouTube, Piped.video or JioSaavn as an audio source, eliminating the need for Spotify Premium”
I guess it lacks the suggestion algo but that’s the privacy compromise I guess.
mars296@kbin.socialto World News@lemmy.world•India confirms citizens have joined Russian military601·1 year agoYour average Indian citizen is probably not as tuned in to the conflict as people in Western nations. Poor men in rural areas are pitched high wages (to them) for some easy work like building barracks away from the frontline. The same thing was happening in Cuba. Then once they arrived in Ukraine they were put in combat roles.

mars296@kbin.socialto World News@lemmy.world•Cameron urges US to aid Ukraine and not show ‘weakness displayed to Hitler’5·1 year agoI just imagined a caretaker/servant seeing a tired Putin late at night, asking him if he was sleepy and offering him tea. Putin accepts tea and the servant returns to the kitchen to prepare the tea. The servant is immediately thrown out the kitchen window.
mars296@kbin.socialto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Exotic ‘dinosaur-like’ turtle that can bite through bone found in Cumbria3·1 year agoI doubt there is a definitive answer if this is the first one they found. Considering it’s native to warm weather areas I doubt it would become invasive in Northern England. They did say it seemed to be doing poorly.
mars296@kbin.socialto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Record number of Americans are homeless amid nationwide surge in rent, report finds32·1 year agoWhat you are describing is inflation going down. Things going back to pre-pandemic prices would be deflation. With the government targeting 2% inflation in an ideal situation, deflation is not going to happen.
mars296@kbin.socialto Europe@feddit.de•Swedish music stars call for Israel Eurovision ban over Gaza9·1 year agoI’m American so I have never followed Eurovision. I always assumed it was European only. Are there many none European countries that participate? The USA doesn’t right?
So only Alabama actually observes it. It’s the only one that closes state offices. Mississippi combines it with Memorial Day so technically there is a day off and they are diluting Memorial Day. I’m a Floridian and have never heard of his birthday being observed or mentioned. In contrast I actually get Juneteenth off.
