The US has the WARN Act, which requires 60 days’ notice or 60 days’ pay if at least 500 employees or 33% of the workplace are getting laid off (whichever is smaller). It’s a threadbare legal minimum on severance, but there is a minimum.
Don’t wait for a layoff, start organizing a union for that juicy ‘represented’ employment status (as opposed to at-will). Unions can’t stop layoffs, but they can minimize the impact, negotiate a higher severance, and provide advanced notice. I highly recommend the good folks at CODE-CWA, they specialize in organizing tech workers
If by ‘we’ you mean the billionaires and political leaders in a position to do something, then absolutely.
I’m not talking about what could be. I’m talking about the political reality that surrounds us.
Maybe not the government or citizens, but war helps the congress members, the CEOs of the military industrial complex, and their families get fabulously wealthy.

I highly recommend the online book How to Think Like a Computer Scientist.
Fun fact, the person maintaining this book is professor emeritus from my college and received multiple awards of recognition from the IEEE
They’ll just have more slides on ethical yachting and how to cleanly produce power by burning heavy oil. COP is a greenwashing party for the rich people in governments.
The NEA is peak business union. There are movements to democratize the union though. It’s happening in most unions lately
This is a good basic starter, but there’s so much more that can be done for efficiency and further reducing your impact while owning a house. These are a few off the top of my head:
They have a debian based version, it’s pretty awesome. It’s still a beta fork atm, but it’s rock solid so far
Factory farming should be banned. Food is not worth that cruelty, even if the fires have nothing to do with the farm itself.
Having lived in a house with radiators, bleeding registers is like a once every 5 years type of task. There’s a much larger leak in the system, you should talk to your apartment manager.

Still a drop in the bucket, but these are fine numbers I can get behind
I know some of the union leaders at UPW, including one of the Paizo writers that may have worked on the starter adventure (I don’t know for certain). They’re incredibly passionate about their work, and honestly would understand your frustrations about capitalism. They likely pushed to make as much as possible free, so folks in your position would still be able to share the joy of their work even if they can’t afford the starter adventure.
I know none of this will make your frustration go away, but I hope you know that they didn’t do it out of malice.
Support crowd funded groups and cooperatives. This will continue until workers are the ones receiving the profit.
