I work for a big enterprise, we have RHEL on all our Linux servers save for a few that are SuSe for SAP.

Microsoft Teams is the official communication tool for business where I work, no need to use whatsapp tho a few colleagues use it for fluff, as for personal/family, some of my family use whatsapp but I don’t (I use Discord), if we want to talk to each other we use “good old-fashioned” phone calls :D

Having an app repository is way more secure than downloading software from random websites, it’s also way faster.

But it’s fine if you don’t like it, each person has its own preferences.

Not the summer sale but the Steam fest, I played House Flipper 2 demo, I really enjoyed it and it turned out it was the most played one.

House Flipper is a sort of simulator, the purpose of the game is to buy houses in horrible conditions, renovate them and resell them, there’s something oddly satisfying in it, I love it :D

I don’t because no antivirus can protect you from yourself, I learned that the hard way while I was still using Windows many years ago.

I had antivirus and antimalware on Windows and I kept them updated and ran scans regularly, almost religiously, than I got a malware that antivirus couldn’t detect (they take a while to be updated with new viruses/malware that constantly come out) and the only way to remove it was a blank new install following a specific procedure to clean it all.

That day I understood that no matter how attentive you are about your antivirus, you’re never really protected until it’s you who learns what to do and what not while accessing the web, so I did a bit of research about how to better configure my PC, how to better recognize phishing/scamming, using adblocker, don’t download random software, stuff like that.

I basically learned “how to behave”. I stopped using antivirus/antimalware on Windows and I didn’t catch a virus since, then I switched to Linux and I still apply the same principles of “good behavior”.

That’s not to say I’m immune to viruses, I’m certainly not, but my mindset now is that if I ever catch a virus, it will be my fault for doing something I shouldn’t have done, and I’ll do my best to learn from it instead of relying on software to do that for me.

You don’t know what an NDA is lol, NDA = Non Disclosure Agreement, it’s very specifically tied to the things they’re revealing to you, Threads NDA means you can’t talk about what they’re telling you about Threads in that specific meeting, it has NOTHING to do with Lemmy.

I fully agree with you, karma “whoring” is a serious problem on reddit, awards could lead to the same behavior here if implemented.

Donations are the best way to support the platform, if you want to be “visible” as donator, opencollective allows you to post a message about it, there’s also a sort of top donators page, that’s more than enough in my opinion.

Content is just content, it’s links, it’s media, whatever

Content is not all the same, there’s quality content and there’s shitposting.

“facebook content” is mostly - to me - shitposting, astroturfing, botting, propaganda, etc. as reddit has become lately, while lemmy content is mostly quality discussions.

I don’t want shitposting burying quality content here, that’s what will happen if we don’t do anything about it.

Not to mention corporate control, look what happened to reddit, and look at how many scandals there are about faceboook (now meta) as a company, why do you think they want to join the fediverse, they don’t give a crap about quality, their only interest is in monetizing stuff, embrace - extend - extinguish, I don’t want ANY of that happening to lemmy.

There are many years of proof already about facebook/meta acting very maliciously, actively breaking laws and being fined for it, is that not proof enough? How many more do you need before you can say they’re not innocent at all?

If I wanted to see facebook shit I would use facebook, I stopped using whatsapp when it was bought by facebook, I don’t want to see their content overwhelming the fediverse, that’s why I’m here instead of there.

That always happens when a new platform is born.

Tech/nerds are always the ones moving first because they don’t mind the quirks, they’re not scared of bugs or instabilities.

They start building up communities until the platform is ready for the rest of the people, it was the same for reddit, tho it happened so many years ago the new people wouldn’t even know about it.

No, but it’s highly unlikely since before it’s been buttered it doesn’t know yet which side to fall upon.

I fully agree, I came here before the blackout started, with the purpose of being involved in lemmy communities as much as possible to stop caring about reddit (it worked btw :D).

Since then I’ve seen a few complaining lemmy doesn’t have this or that, lemmy is not ready, etc., forgetting that reddit wasn’t done in a day either.

I think the most important thing to remember is that we - the users - have all the power to build up communities, not the higher-ups always running after profitable quarters, it’s we who built up reddit from nothing and we can do the same here, we just have to be willing and patient, as you rightfully said, and not give up at the small obstacles along the way.
