Great Lakes region, USA. April 2026.

I’ve seen no less than 10 flickers over the past two weeks. They’re very pretty woodpeckers. Here in the Eastern side of the US we have the yellow-shafted variety. Here’s a collection of the ones I was able to photograph.

Thanks, it’s a tad soft, but these birds are reluctant to let me close. This was the best I could get. I’m surprised he let me get this close, 15’ or so.

He was quite hidden away. He was perched in a heavy tree line between the road and a river. I’m surprised I even spotted him. I’m glad I did because while there were a ton of birds they were all Song Sparrows and Red-winged Blackbirds. Great birds, but extremely common.

For sure they’re the prettiest woodpecker in my area. Personally I’d say the pileated is my favorite because of their size and their large red crest, but flickers are close by. Definitely a top bird!

Pileated are certainly a neat sight, but they are a little too gangly to hit my top 10 lol. Nothing beats the visual texture mashup of the flicker, it’s like a gorgeous pile of laundry

Beautiful! So lucky to see so many. I’ve only ever spotted one.

I got to work with a couple a little bit last year, and I heard we have a Pileated in now, which I’ve also never seen here.

Woodpeckers are some of my favorite non-raptor, non-corvid birds.
