I started blocking Meta with NextDNS. Zuck is a creepy piece of shit who belongs in prison. If you want to resolve his domains it’s not happening on my networks or devices ever again.

i really wanted to do the same but without blocking whatsapp 🥲 unfortunately I have to use whatsapp … is there any list out there that blocks just Meta’s tracking without necessarily blocking something like whatsapp ?

Not the person you asked, but also a nextdns user: I have a light (in terms of blocking) profile on my router (set up via a DoH address, but DoT and traditional DNS are also possible). Then I have a much more strict profile I use just for my phone and laptop with more serious blocking, including porn filters (recovering addict). I set these up per-device, but later I learned I can do it in Tailscale (which I did).

PiHole and AdGuard are both easy to setup servers for network wide DNS blocking. (Homenetworking)

NextDNS is an external entity that allows you to setup DNS blocking on devices that support DoT, DoH, and occasionally plaintext DNS. (For your phone and other mobile devices)

iPhones and Androids both support DoT while Firefox (and likely most modern browsers) supports DoH.

If you don’t want to rely on an external entity, you could use a wire guard split tunnel to block your ads away from your home network. Additionally you can set up a VPS and self host your DNS server there.

If you can block all DNS traffic on you router, you can them redirect it to your own DNS server.

And PiHole seems to be the one many people use for that. Lots of guides for it, pre-made list on what to block etc.

Interesting that they don’t mention using things like Firefox’s Facebook Container (which essentially puts Facebook trackers in jail) or just outright deleting your Meta accounts. Harder to track what you’re not engaged with.

If you’re actually mad at Meta, do yourself a favor and delete your account; join the Fediverse instead. Friendica is the analog replacement for Facebook, and Pixelfed is the replacement for Instagram. There, EFF. I improved your article.

And if you know someone that says, “BuT mY fRiEnDs ArE aLL tHeRe!” tell them to stop being a whiny little baby and make new friends.

I like to scare people that they will be “the parents still on facebook” if they won’t abandon corporate social media.

    I used three Meta products:

Whatsapp, Facebook Marketplace, and Instagram. I’ve completely gone off Insta, I only really used it to see posts and reels my friends sent me.

I don’t really know an alternative to WhatsApp and Marketplace that I can use. I’m very careful to not interact with any Facebook advertisements on Marketplace though.

Signal is the non-corporate replacement for What’s App although realistically you end up having both due to network effects.

Signal is great. Think I read that WhatsApp will be forced to allow interoperability with other apps. Would be great if you could use Signal to access chats that started on WhatsApp. Fuck Zuckerberg. Whatsapp the only Meta app I use and only because the bastards bought it

You might benefit from firefoxes Facebook containers extension that prevents cross site Facebook tracking :)

I know everyone downvoted you a ton but I’d be kinda curious to hear why you have such a strong preference for avoiding gecko, and what mozilla policies you take issues with

I kinda wonder if there’s a similar extension or functionality available for Chromium based browsers…

In my experience it’s been less hive-mindy than reddit was, but to be completely honest I think you kinda get out what you put in

If you approach things combatively, you’ll get combativeness. If you approach things with curiosity, I find you get openness and a willingness to engage with folks sincerly.

Not sure why you’d wish the death of a platform people are enjoying and that serves as a small escape from the broader corporate web, just because you personally didn’t like it.

I rather like it here, I’d be really sad to see this space cease to exist. It sounds like you’d be better served by going somewhere you like more instead of staying here and just spouting bitterness :(

I think it’s pretty fair to describe ‘wishing for the death of things other people are enjoying’ as spreading bitterness 😅

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a bad experience in your time here. I hope you find somewhere you feel more at home, best of luck to you too

There’s many things I dislike about how Mozilla operates, they are however completely outweighed by the massive list of things I dislike about Google.

Seeing as the only realistic options for browsers use either Blink or Gecko as their engine, I’d much rather use Mozilla’s offering than contribute (even if ever so slightly) to Google’s monopolizing of the web.
