As usual, a few pointers
Trying to make a doc for migrants. Just the overview. Got the cold shoulder from one of the small web guys equating Lemmy to heroine. Essentially ‘either do it like me or you are wrong’
Same as it ever was online.
As for me? Missing a few communities. Kinda head scratching at things over all, but it could be worse.
Both want to make a few instances and have no energy to babysit them.
There’s a few communities I’m missing still, mostly shitpost and fan fiction subs. I’d like to start them but I’m still not sure of my own footing yet.
There is !fanfiction@literature.cafe
Yeah I had initially checked it out but seeing that there were so few posts and all over a year old was a little disheartening.
We call them “instances” round here. A sub is my mom according to my friend
An instance is not the same as a community/sub.
Working on it. Little lonely since most of communities from reddit don’t seem to be here but still searching so we’ll see.
Definitely feeling like I need to install linux on my mac though, perhaps as some sort of initiation?
Ah, the good old hackintosh routine!
Wouldn’t recommend linux on a mac unless it’s an old model (like ~2012)
M1 not old enough? I can already feel Apple trying to kill it.
There’s Asahi linux for M1 but the dev that runs it is a bit of a nutter. Also apple software just works best with its hardware (until the planned obsolesence of your hardware happens and suddenly nothing works).
Well that saves me a bit of work for now then. I’ve got all my old phones/ipads though so perhaps it’s time to try tinkering with things there
There are a few tools like lima that let you play around with Ubuntu from macOS if you are still curious. Also an official one from Canonical (company behind Ubuntu linux) whose name I forget now that does a similar thing. Essentially you get a user friendly linux VM to play around with.
The peer pressure (and stupid broken updates from MS) finally got me to install linux about 8mos into using lemmy. It’s pretty great, though - wish I’d done it sooner.
Went with mint right after the announcement of tpm 2.0 since I’m running an off lease decade old office box.
What’re you running?
When I joined I felt like I moved to a village after living in a metropolis. There’s positives and negatives to that, but in the end Lemmy satisfies my doomscrolling needs so I’m never coming back to reddit.
When you need to doomscroll.
Why not scroll wikipedia?Oh wow I love that!
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca can help!
I encourage you to create them and foster them.
Let me get through the welcome newcomers stuff first! :)
Definitely better at navigating this week than last
Good to hear!
Enjoying it. I’m loving the filters I can use to limit some of the political spam.
It’s going okay! Still trying to decide which instance to call home. I still find myself on reddit probably equal amount to Lemmy though, unfortunately
The particular instance doesn’t matter too much as long as it hasn’t defederated from other instances you care about & vice versa - since you can still see, post, & interact with content from other instances. I made accounts on .ml and .dbzer0.
It matters significantly. Depending on the users the all feed is totally different. US politics are almost non existent on szmer.info
Defederation is a secondary point.
All is dependent on what instances your home instance is federated with. Federation/defederation by your home instance determines what you see in All.
Szmer.info is federated with lemmy.world, so you would be able to see politics@lemmy.world, which has US politics. Unless you’ve filtered things out of your feed, but that’s different.
I made an account on .ml as well but noticed a bunch of comments weren’t showing up when I was viewing posts on .ml which is unfortunate
ml is better to be avoided unless you’re an extremist or want to become one. Well, Lemmy as a whole is very extremist, which is my biggest issue with it, so… still here.
Huh. Comments shouldn’t be affected, as I understand it, just posts from defederated instances won’t show up. For instance, .ml is defederated from any and all porn instances - so porn doesn’t show up in my feed. I wonder if it could be a delay in the comments showing up, not actually an absence of those comments?
Either way, plenty of good instances to join that are less defederated than .ml
Yea, I thought the same thing. But take a look at this comment I made to see what I have been seeing. Not sure what the explanation could be
Whoa that’s really odd. You might submit an issue on github, if you want: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy
I have to confess. I still scroll Reddit from time to time (no longer use my account), and the front page just has a lot more variety. There’s still a lot of bot content from the occasional AITA that’s purely clickbait to the reposts.
I do like that comments and conversations are better here. I’m seeing familiar names and I like it.
Pro: there is a Lemmy app (Voyager) based on the amazing Apollo for Reddit app.
Cons: Like 5 people total were chatting about the Super Bowl in the most populous NFL community.
There don’t seem to be parallels to most of the communities I belonged to on Reddit.
Still going to give it a try, but my excitement waned pretty quickly.
Indeed, Lemmy tends to have fewer but more engaged users. Which is weird at first. Can’t wait for the moment we’ll stop seeing known faces
There don’t seem to be parallels to most of the communities I belonged to on Reddit.
One adjustment I had to make when I moved over to Lemmy is posting/commenting more. On Reddit most of the time your comment was buried. On Lemmy, a bunch of people are going to see it.
Not saying you need to be the only poster, but sometimes everyone just posting a bit more will reveal a community.
I personally like Jerboa, but I also used to use RIF is fun for Reddit which had a similar UI. I’m probably in the minority on preferences which is nothing new
I genuinely miss the F1 and CFB communities for the commentary, but I’m glad I left reddit when they killed 3rd party apps. It’s nice to have a media feed that isn’t cluttered with ads.
There is !formula1@lemmy.world. I’ll probably create a post later this week for sports communities on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca
I’m already subbed. I’ve been trying to be more active about commenting
Im shocked that the two biggest CFB communities have fewer than 1000 members.
A lot of it has to do with the type of folks who were in the initial Lemmy wave; generally a crowd that is more familiar with linux distros than the tuck rule. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a comment on the interests of the type of folks who were more apt to leave Reddit for another platform. Mainstream sports attract a mainstream audience, whom (on the whole) are more likely to stick to a mainstream website. Lemmy will grow but it took years before some of those communities grew to the size they are on Reddit, and it happened then without a comparable mainstream competitor.
Not only the initial wave. The hurdle to sign up and understand what an instance is is so big that 90% of Lemmy users will be programmers.
The sign up page should obfuscate all the noise about “instances” away.
And there really isn’t much posting in any of them. It’s hard, because I am a fan of smaller NFL and CFB teams, and it’s just me posting stuff with no discussion. So it gets to a point you feel like you’re being annoying about it. I do Supercross discussion threads for people if they wanna join in, in an admittedly small community (even the Reddit one was like…maybe 200 active users, 30k total subs). I have been the only commenter there for over a year lol.
Have you tried promoting it on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and other NFL communities?
I haven’t, but I’m not too worried about it. The football ones are a bigger worry; the game threads were easily the biggest thing I was on Reddit for, and the magic isn’t here yet. Part of the issue though is now that I don’t get on Reddit or here as much, I’m watching IRL with friends and don’t sit on my phone to interact like that lol.
Pro: There are lots of apps other than Voyager for people to find what works for them.
yeah we’re here not because it’s the next new reddit, but because we were tired of reddit and spez. never said this place wasn’t a fixer upper! it’ll take some time to build up communities. but this place is doing better and better and only seems to be growing.
keep lemmy in your pocket. crosspost some memes. it’ll be here for you, and even more so if you’re here for us!
go birds 😜
Sorry, I used to post a lot more on sports communities when I was on Reddit but haven’t really felt the urge to sense moving to Lemmy. It didn’t help that the game wasn’t very good last night either. We are here. I’m pretty active on the fantasy football community. But there is just a handful of us playing there. Feel free to join us at !fantasyfootball@lemmy.world. I’m going to start our offseason mega thread now that the superbowl is done
I should have been in there, but my eyes were just too glued on the belting I was witnessing. It’s definitely a bummer that a lot of non-tech or news communities aren’t there yet in terms of participation, but at least we’re not making some Rich assholes even more rich on here!
The eagles are my wife’s favorite team and it was a fun watch for us. Ass. Whoopin.
Yeah, the mood is a bit different here. We do owls, raccoons, blahaj and Linux. Extra raccoons on weekends, though. I love this place.
Don’t forget Star Trek!
…
And beans.
Like 5 people total were chatting about the Super Bowl in the most populous NFL community.
Seems like you guys still posted 120 comments, that’s not so bad!
There don’t seem to be parallels to most of the communities I belonged to on Reddit.
Feel free to have a look at !communitypromo@lemmy.ca for some recommendations, especially this post: https://lemm.ee/post/54763669
Still going to give it a try, but my excitement waned pretty quickly.
Sorry to hear, hopefully we can make your experience a bit nicer
mlem is pretty great. arctic too. I’m planning on switching back to Android this year though, anyone know any equivalent quality Android clients?
good thanks I’ve sucked 4 dicks already
Don’t forget to get your card punched!
The fifth is free!Four?? But I’m literally right here
You’re gonna need to get those numbers up.
Hell yeah, brother.
Rookie Numbers
Not wasting any time? One more dick and you get custom flair on all your posts. Welcome.
I deleted my last account on another instance and started a new one. So technically I’m not really NEW. But to answer your question, I wanna die.
Hell yeah, brother.
Still trying to figure this all out.
It sucks to prepare for a new social media home. I am still on Reddit, but I know it’s only a matter of time before some broligarch decides to take it down or do a TikTok reboot.
If you browse on PC, I found that the Alexandrite UI (https://a.lemmy.world/) made the transition easier for me. If you try it out use the drop-down at the top left to bounce between “subscribed”, “local”, and “all”. “All” will help you find communities you like to subscribe to. Welcome and good luck.
Thank you.
are also good options!
Welcome, feel free if you have any questions!
Thank you.
I miss the drama to feed my schadenfreude I got from reading boru and the like. But besides not able to feed my bad vice, I think I can survive here.
For schadenfreude about internal drama there is !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com and !fediverselore@lemmy.ca
Is that instance defederated from .world ? The link gives me the “couldn’t_find_community” error. I searched for the community via Duckduckgo and was able to see it, but was logged out. When I logged in, all the posts disappeared.
Huh, interesting. It very well might be - I am on the dbzero instance, which generally does not defederate like .world or beehaw. Couldn’t tell you why .online is defederated from that community instance, although I assume there is some record of that somewhere.
Did something happen on the alien site last week?
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrlep5xpmzo
Since then, quite a few subs are looking for alternatives. !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com lists them.
lol, they ban subs based on billionaire tears now? damn.
For what it’s worth, there is a long history of banning subreddits once they get negative mass-media flak, even if they were well-known on reddit beforehand. The site is a business nervous about its reputation.
