I literally offered it as-is last week, not running, for around $400. Nobody took my offer, so I got it running again myself. Price went up to $1000.

Engine sounds smooth as silk for being just a hair over 200k miles, transmission good too. Needs keys.

Yeah, this is not intended as an advertisement, more like how I got a deceased person’s truck running again. I had to fix basically all the main battery wires, and break the ignition lock.

It cranks, it runs, it needs quite a bit more work, and this isn’t exactly dull is it? 🤦‍♂️

I had the '96 Chevy S-10 version of that but basically same truck and same shade of green. That truck hated me. Fix one thing, another thing broke. After replacing the cylinder head, fuel pump, fuel line, slave cylinder, hood and windshield*, alternator, and a random electrical gremlin or ten, it ran like a dream for like two weeks. Then the brake line burst and I finally just sold the thing. The guy who bought it from me fixed the brake line and drove it for like 6 or 7 years with no problems.

    Called it the POS-10.

*Hood latch broke driving down the highway and slammed the hood back into the windshield at 55 mph. Fun!

Oof, I’ve seen that happen twice, but as a driving spectator, not the person to actually have their own hood fly up on them.

Once their hood flies off like 50 feet in the air, the spectator/driver (me) had to observe said flying hood and prepare to drive off in the ditch to avoid it.

I successfully avoided the flying hood, but damn, you remind me that I need to check that hood latch…

Hood stayed attached, thankfully, but was a total loss. Thankfully there were plenty of donors at the local scrapyard.

Here’s the bastard the day before the brake line broke and the last time everything was working and I gave up on it:

Damn. I actually want to keep this truck for myself, but I can’t. It feels like sleeping on a dead man’s couch/bed.

I want a smaller truck like this, hell I need it. But it’ll just drive me crazy knowing I’m sitting in a dead man’s seat.

I’m doing good enough to even work on it and test drive it every now and then. It’s haunted though…

I get that. But considering how many times I’ve needed a reasonably sized truck lately, I’d at least think twice lol.

At least working on them is fun. Despite the money pit it turned out to be, I did enjoy the time I spent tinkering with it and getting it going.

I do have a lot of things to think about before making any definitive decisions… I dunno yet, I’m just at the point of fixing the bare minimum to get it properly road-worthy…

To me, repairs and occasional modifications are never the fun part, that’s the tedious part.

The fun part is when the job is said and done successfully, especially after a good soaking bath followed by a shower, and a beer of course…

I had a '01 GMC Jimmy that had been totalled from a head-on collision, but there was a `01 Chevy Blazer in the junkyard that had been totalled from rear collision… So I actually had a ‘Blimmy’ as both of those suvs were pretty much the same thing except for some slightly different panels that still lined up pretty well.

Idk who was copying whose homework, but it worked out pretty well for me.

Oh shit, I didn’t fully answer your question yesterday, my bad.

He had the battery cables all kinda goofed up, cut up, messed up, however you wanna describe it. I think he was on a certain substance and his mind wasn’t working right, he would always fuck with stuff that didn’t even need messing with.

So, I had to halfway reverse engineer which wire actually went where, do a cable extension on the chopped alternator cable, apply a few proper wire crimps (fuckall with random tied wires and electrical tape), and reinstall his totally borked attempt of installing the side mount battery terminals.

Then, since the keys are long lost to the sands of time and dead man’s memory, I had to force break the ignition lock tumblers with vice grips. Well, now I can crank it up with no key and no tools, just by hand now.

Oh, also it’s gonna need a new battery, the one he had in it has a bad cell and barely charges up to about 11.5 volts, so it needs a jump start to get it cranked up right now, but other than those complications, all the main systems seem to be working and running fine. 👍

We’re working on getting the paperwork and title sorted out for it before I bother with any further repairs or parts.

      Wish us luck 🤞

“he would always fuck with stuff that didn’t even need messing with”

Funny considering it sounds like he left behind a ton of stuff that DID need to be messed with to fix. Job well done and good luck on the sale!

LOL, since the Vice Grip method sheared all the lock tumblers, now I can just turn the ignition by hand, no tools necessary now, not even a screwdriver.

Yeah yeah, almost anyone could come along and try to steal it at the moment, but the battery also has a bad cell and only charges up to about 11.5 volts max, it currently requires the help of jumper cables to start right now, and I disconnect the negative battery terminal after I park it and shut it down.

Ultimately, if we don’t sell it first, I’m planning on replacing both the ignition lock and the battery, along with the driver’s side door, because the lock on that is also fucked and currently rigged up with a padlock.

If I get that far into repairs, the price is going up to $1500, but as is, simple proof the engine runs and it drives, as-is $1000.

I dunno, time will tell, but I ain’t about to go much further into any more repairs until I can get all the paperwork and title sorted out. The original owner passed away and didn’t exactly leave a will…

It never hurts to have a beat up truck to do beat up truck things.

We had an old S-10 and it just had a panel of switches for starting the fuel pump and ignition. It was later completely gutted and we installed a big block 380 and supercharger, roll cage and racing slicks for drag racing, but that’s not dull enough for this place.

                It was very ridiculous.

The body work was last, so mid project it looked like a rust bucket but ran like a demon. Even mild acceleration with the exhaust cutout was basically a war crime on traffic.

                Gas mileage wasn’t so great…

Whatever the future of this truck is, I dunno yet, until we sort out the paperwork. But in the meantime, it does have at least one beater truck duty to handle soon. We gotta remove the love seat sofa he used to sleep on at my mom’s, the thing is nasty stinky…

Bonus points, the truck already has about half a tank of gasoline in these otherwise trying times…

Keep that in the tank and, in a few months, you may be able to buy a new truck!

They actually do, and thank you for the reminder.

Family loves me too, so don’t forget to appreciate and hug the people you love when you can…
