It might not really be in the spirit of the post, but it’s because of the brain. They take a lot of power to fuel, so to keep that big brain running, we have to skimp on things like mobility. Babies can be pretty dumb, but, they’ve been learning a LOT. They just can’t tell you about it yet, but they will soon, because unlike the pig, they are listening and they are learning.

I can’t remember the details but I remember reading something about this. In the evolutionary sense there’s a trade off for our big sophisticated brains. We’re not born fully developed, we need another year or so just to build out the wiring and muscles necessary to walk even.

Have a real look at meat factories and tell me that is natural. I have nothing against eating wild animals like deer to counteract the lack of predators. But eating industry meat and claiming you are naturaly a predator is ridiculous, especially with the amount and quality of meat alternatives available.

I don’t think lack of intelligence is the reason most people are fine with eating animal meat and not human babies. It’s usually that humans just value animal lives less than that of other humans.

prey animals also have adaptations, like precocial birth, which is a fully developed baby that can run at birth useful in areas with alot predators, camoflauge like with deer. Hares have babies that can run at birth while rabbits have altricial babies, like mice and humans they cant do any of this and are helpless.
That’s not intelligence in prey animals. Those are instinctual actions.
If we had to explain to a super intelligent and powerful alien why it shouldn’t eat us but eating our animals is okay we’d have a big problem.
I believe for us the “non human” aspect is most important for us and which animals are food and which are pets is a cultural thing. Because any other property besides “non human” would eg allow us to eat dumb or disabled humans or to breed special food races of humans.
